Touring Scotland - Bristol to Glasgow -too much for one day?
Hiya all,
Next summer, we are planning on taking a week out, and touring Scotland.
Getting there - Bristol to Glasgow - too much for one day?
We don't want to be cripped before we even start the 1 week tour!
I just checked googlemaps.
375 miles - all static motorway travel
6.5 hours
** and thats not even taking into account lunch breaks and comfort breaks!
Hope you can advise what you do, when covering the miles - just trying to get the the start of the tour!
Cheers
Martin

The furthest I've done in a day is about 250 miles. Motorways are super-boring so I would advise taking stretches of A-roads where possible - yes it will take a bit longer but it will be worth it as you'll actually enjoy the A-roads. My journey was about a 50/50 split motorway/A-roads and that would take around 6 hours with breaks so I'd give yourself 7 to 8 hours minimum.

I reckon a stop in the lakes/north york moors on the way might be a good call.
If you left the night before your planned all dayer you could make it up a few hundred miles before sun down. The next morning sees you nearly at Glasgow and back on your original plan....
I did Sheffield to Bury St Edmunds and back -A1/A14 on the way there = boredom +3.5 hrs
Random route on the way home = fun + 4.5 hrs

I dunno about doing 375 miles, but I do North West London to Swansea quite alot and on a good day It'll take 3 hours with a 30 minute break. The times on google maps are always slow but I'd say you can do it without to much difficulty, just take a whole day to do it. Can just be alot more laid back then and not in any huge rush, makes things alot more relaxing. Not just for lunch and comfort breaks but the tank range isn't anything special on the 400's.
Out of curiosity, where are you planning on riding (which are the good roads n sites I suppose)? Because I'm planning a little UK tour this summer too. My grandparents live in the lake district so it'll predominantly be around there because of the free food and a place to kip; but we'll be heading into Scotland for a short while as well.

Suppose it could be done but all motorway would more than likely have you falling asleep or have you ending up doing silly speeds and having to have a nice chat with a friendly policeman so i would suggest split it between motorways and A roads.
If you want to know some of the better A roads then ask away in a seperate post

Isle of Skye does have some fantastically sufaced roads and great scenery. The bridge looks like a cracking piece of engineering in a small space. We went in November for a week and had a small tour of the island. We were in the car though but it would be fantastic on a bike, you also need to go up over Applecross (have a look on you tube to find out what i mean.)
