McWilliams Superbike Academy - Almeria, Spain
If any of you are looking for fun in the sun this winter, beg borrow or steal to get the £650 together for the race package. 3 days on track, 4 nights in a 4 star hotel, bike and kit transported out for you.
I'm just back from one and have already booked one for next year. Superbly run, shed loads of track time and as much or as little tuition as you want, at your pace.
I had resigned myself to not getting a spin on the NC29 since Graeme France did a rebuild on it, taking the engine up to 70BHP. Due to work commitments I wasnt home untill November and all but a few trackdays in the UK were finished for the year. Then I heard about this and got myself out there.
Christ the bike was flying!! Graeme did a top job not only with the rebuild, but with the set up too. I was able to carve lumps out of a good few bigger bikes in the twisty part of Almeria circuit, only to be laughed at up the 1 km back straight! Still, 2 seconds off the pace of the back half of the 600's wasnt too shabby.
So really 2 massive thank yous are in order. First to Graeme France for putting together an awesome 400 for me, it really was surprisingly quick and handled and stopped on the mark. Top job mate, REALLY looking forward to racing it next year.
And secondly to Gerry and all the team at Racedays/Jeremy McWilliams Superbike Academy for putting together an astounding 3 day package, casual but professional, no egos in sight.

It was fecking awesome, took 30 seconds out of my lap times over 3 days, learned so much it was unreal.
Just as another sickener, there was a German team there testing their Moto2 bikes for next year. They are mental quick and Uber noisey....gorgeous.
Eugene Laverty, Jeremy McWilliams, Gino Rea, Simon Crafar and young Josh Elliot (watch out for him in the future)to name but a few were all there instructing, answering questions or leading you round over the 3 days. Cant stress enough how brilliant it was, and just how good a job Francey did on my 400. If the straight there was shorter you could really give a lot of 600's a hammering.
Maybe see you out there!

The best modification you can do to your bike is get your suspension renewed and set up for your weight and riding style, then think about louder exhausts.
I doubt i will ever go on track but the suspension on the road is absolutely fantastic a real revelation compared to how it was before with the standard forks and rear shock. It really is worth saving up for Graeme to sort your suspension. Its ace to have the confidence to carry the speed into the corners now and as Justmartyn has said show the bigger bikes up.
Now all i have to save up for is a complete stainless steel exhaust system (70 BHP you say Justmartyn oh well my list is now actually endless
)

So far Karl I've done the forks, put Dymags on it, EBC discs, ram air, dynojetted, balanced cams, balanced crank, balanced con rods, HRC cdi unit, new rear shock, GF SS/Carbon race system, Hi Comp pistons and a 520 chain conversion. It's a totally different bike than how it started, and Graeme made the entire package work together. It's a fantastic wee bike and I absolutely love wringing the neck off it! Like I said, in the back section of Almeria where all the bends are NOBODY was going past me, with the exception of a few GP125's. Mind you they were slip streaming 600's and stuffing them into turn 1. Totally agree though, get it handling right then see about upping the power.

Blimey, youd be better off buying a cbr600rr, maybe an 08 version to keep up with the other 600s and let someone else use the 29! Cough, cough.......justmartyn wrote:So far Karl I've done the forks, put Dymags on it, EBC discs, ram air, dynojetted, balanced cams, balanced crank, balanced con rods, HRC cdi unit, new rear shock, GF SS/Carbon race system, Hi Comp pistons and a 520 chain conversion. Funny you should say that Chris.....................
My mate Jason is taking it out in March, I'll be on the afore mentioned 600! All you need to do is get your arse over to NI for spin on either....you know the dates! Or if you happened to be in the vicinity of Almeria, oh I dont know, say around the 10th, 11th or 12th of March...............

I've been going on these events for a good few years now and echo the above sentiments, thoroughly recommended
. You don't often see many 400s so it's nice to hear another 400 riders opinion. As you say, no ego's, and that's great, nothing like UK track days
