NC35 - Top Speed - 1st n 2nd gear ?

Post by 400_Rider »

Howdy guys :)

Been doing a lot of mods to me bike recently, new chain and sprockets, standard gearing 520 conversion plus new brake caliper seals and master cylinder rebuild kit as my brakes was sticking on.

Some of you might have read before my bike topped out at 109mph recently but I had 5 teeth more on the rear sprocket as standard, that plus my brakes might have been sticking, lots of factors could have contributed to this.

Anyway today I just wanted to see what the bike would do in 1st and 2nd at the limiter and I wanted to know what you guys were getting.

1997 RVF400

1st gear limiter 40mph (or just over)
2nd gear limiter saw 60mph

Does that sound about right for what you guys are getting ?

I'll go for a top speed run soon see what we get, I got a sat nav top speed recall thing on the bike so I'll be able to tell you a true top speed of the NC35  but for now I just wondered if 40 n 60 was right for 1st n 2nd gear ?

Cheers 8-)

If your running standard gearing then unless someones been messing with gear ratios(very unlikey) then what yor getting should be spot on.
For refenence tho when i had standard gearing it struggled in 6th so dont be suprised if your bike feels sluglish when going for a top speed run, Drop a tooth on the front, much better for the road.

My NC30 shows over 60 in first and by the time I reach the same point in 2nd I'm not bothered what it say as if the police were behind me I'd be in a lot of trouble.

I'm -1 on the front I think but it won't put the speedo out by a million miles.

Oh had an idea guys that might explain it ??

My bike should have the 17" rear wheel on but it has an 18" rear wheel on from the previous model, could this effect the speeds I am getting ?

Gonna have one more try at a high speed run then if no better than 109mph flat out am gonna take the air box off and look for restrictions etc

30 and 35 gearboxes are different...
30 has a very tall first gear, 35 doesn't.

I don't get why you are so concerned...I reckon only racing types need to be railing the bike to the red line in 1st and 2nd!

Ahhh thanks for that CMSMJ1 :worthy:

See, I been reading everywhere about the NC35 having a very tall first gear yet mine isn't, it tops out at 40mph :o but if thats how it should be then thats cool.

See, I came from a Yamaha R1, and while I don't expect R1 levels of performance I am very concerned about the RVF, I have another bike a GSX-R 400RRSP2 and that would smoke the RVF and I don't understand why, so I want to get the RVF performing right.

Last time I road tested the RVF the bike topped out at 109mph, since then I have changed brake caliper seals, master cylinder rebuild kit (brakes was sticking on, not any more) and new chain and sprockets going back to standard gearing with a 520 conversion (was 5 teeth more before but standard now).

I have just got back from a top speed run on the RVF, I tested with both speedo on and detached to see if there was a difference, having got back and looked at the data this is what I found  :(

Previous top speed - 109mph

Run 1 today, max speed 12,000rpm in top gear ...... 107mph :( :(

Run 2 today, 12k in top, no speedo attached .... 106mph :( :(

How can the bike be revving to 12k in top gear and only do 107mph ?

Clearly I ain't happy with this, Aprilia RS125's will be blowing me away at this rate on a RVF 400 :(

Any ideas whats goin on with the bike guys ? I dont understand if the revs are round how can I get any more speed from the bike ?

Am gonna check for restriction in the carbs as my next job, god I hope I find sommat in there, if I dont god knows :(

:( definetly restricted..... I went max with mine ... in top gear at about 12k... and even in 5th it went at max ...more than 12k ...don't know how much but it was realy loud  (max meening it's top speed)
I don't know how fast I was going cause mine is in km/h not mph.. bit it shows about 190km/h (118mph)... and the needle had no where else to go :P

Could it be also the spark plugs in he's case? some one told me that when i used to have the same problem with a CBR 125

Don't mind me if i'm talking rubbish :P i'm a girl.... just started learning about this things
