They do get bloody hot. try running with your lights on and it should get less hot so quickly.

The end of the day it is how it works....

not charging or charging too much?

have you tested it or just replaced it?

have a look in the VFR section for Reg/rec stuff...we Honda posse blow ours up all the time and there will be details for testing them - pretty much the same animal between bikes.

Hi Rick,
You can test a few things if youve got a test meter.
With the bike steady at 5000rpm you can test the voltage across the battery- lights on hi and test between the + and - you should have between 13.5V ans 15.5V.
You can test the three wires from the generator, test that there is no continuity between the wires and ground and you can do a no load test of the genny by running the bike at 500rpm and testing the AC volts between each of the wires, you should have more than 70Volts at 500rpm. Then you can test continuity between the wires of the reg/rec and they should be open circuit between the three wires.
Hope this helps.

as above except for the output of the alternator, the readings should be 50volts.
