Maybe I should have put it back on before testing the charging system at 5,000 revs for a few mins :? :grin:

I need a new generator, showing 13.5 at 5,000. Arse.

That voltage is spot on, nothing wrong with that. The haynes manual has all the specs.

what you mean is the charge rate is 13.5 at 5000rpm.the alternator would be putting out ac volts of roughly 50v.

the correct charge rate is between 13.5-15v at 5000rpm.this is dc volts usually tested at the battery.

ok thanks. am getting 13.5v (just) at the battery at 5,000rpm. there are burn marks on the alternator connector plug

replace or snip and crimp the plug with nice tight connectors (or solder ideally) to stop any more heat buildup.
same as our beloved ducati's but worse believe it or not, yet ducati gets the rap for shit electrics (must have borrowed honda's design then)

Last time I rode a 999s the tacho decided to start reading the wrong revs (not half [of the 2 cylinder revs either!), not entirely confidence inspiring! I do agree that nc30 electrics are shite though... nc35 not as bad but still suss.

The electrics are dodgy on vfr's, but if you sort inspect and test thoroughly and upgrade parts (to parts that WORK - not honda!) then it will be bulletproof and give good peace of mind.

the later electrical system on the 749/999 series is very good overall, but they do suffer the coil pack failures which i think was a symptom of the dash madness.

Yeah I have heard that. TBH the electrical gremlins that I experienced wouldn't put me off owning one, I really liked riding the 999s, great real world sportsbike. It's a pity the earlier series of their sports marques looked better (in my opinion!).

I've learnt these days that pretty much all electrical issues on any bike can be fixed, even owning a 916+ series would be a piece of cake after a certain nc30 I've owned.

We live and learn. Making all of my nc30's 100% electrically reliable is usually the #1 priority when I get one. I'm sure there are many others out there that will agree with this after the bad taste of honda electrics is left with you.
