That says that your generator seems to be working at least. I assume the readings are at idle?

So..your engine is making the alternator/generator spin and this is sending AC current through the wiring to the regulator.. The regulator should change the signal to a DC signal and send it to the battery at higher than 14V to charge it up.

You are not getting any charge..so either the wiring between the generator and the reg rec is knackered - so you'll have to try and get a look at all the connectors and make sure they seat and seal properly and then if that all looks good to you then it would seem that the reg rec might be goosed.. Does it get hot? super hot, or warm?

mine gets about 11/10 hot... hot enough that you cannot touch it...but I got a gasxr1000 genny in my NC30..

Unplug the reg rec, do the same tests as you did with the generator wiring. This will show if the reg rec is getting the current to regulate at all.

Try to do it at 5k revs - Mr Valves says 70v AC is about right - so you want something close to that. It should rise witht he revs as you imagine the magnets/stator coils going faster in the engine.

If the results are the same at the reg rec connector as they were at the generator then you can pretty much guess that your reg rec does not work... So borrow one if you can...or bite the bullet and buy a new one.

off you pop..put your beer down and get in that garage... :o

nope.

connect it all as it should be but where the connector goes into the reg rec take the readings there.

hi, dont no if i did it right but i put the + probe to the r/b wire and the - probe to the b/w i got about 25v. also i was fiddling around with the wiring loom because there is lots of repairs literally about 20 dont no why he has done most of them, but at the front of the bike where the b/w wires come from the idicators the is 4 b/w wires conected into one.(hope this makes sense) one of the 4 wires is completely cut off, i couldnt find the rest of it. i will post a pic but i havent a clue where it goes.Image Image

do you think it a wiring issue because the whole loom has got repairs all over it, or is it a part not working. thanks

The reg rec should get 50+ V AC into it on the 3 generator wires. If it is only gettin 25V then something, somehwre is not right in your wiring.

Replacing a loom is a bit of a ballache but not impossible given some patience and some time.

Those snipped indy wires might be from an alarm system to make them flash at the same time when activated? total guess..but might be.

You need to check continuity on the wiring - get the haynes for the bike, or bandit as I'll guess the wiring is similar. bit of a pain but will have to do it to find the faults..

you can do it.... :ugeek:

The charging circuit is actually very simple and does not involve the wiring loom beyond the yellow wires coming from the generator to the reg/rec. The "repairs" do certainly look like a previous installation of an alarm system and will not affect the charging circuit at all.
You can ignore the rest of the bikes wiring and the charging circuit is as simple as shown below =/- a couple of connectors:

GENERATOR-----(three yellow wires)-----REG/REC-----(2 wires)-----BATTERY

If there is a charging problem then it has to be one of the above.

The generator should be showing around 50V AC WITH THE REG/REC UNPLUGGED FROM IT and the bike running
The battery should be showing a good 12.5+V DC with all the headlights etc turned on and the bike running
