So I've been riding the bike a bit and found a bit of oil on my left boot. I had a bit of a look about and see oil on the engine, which isn't good, following the oil points to the can cover. Well it could be a lot worse. Like most skilled mechanicalists I just tightened the bolts down a bit more ... I'm surprised that didn't work.
Originally I used a gasket kit from eBay and noticed I had a bit of a problem with the gasket fitting that and cover itself was a bit corroded. I had a look about and found a genuine gasket going a bit cheap, got that, so yesterday i started the job.
Saddle, tank, airbox and fairing off is fairly quick. The plug caps were a bit fiddley and the cover bolts werent to difficult with flex head ratchet spanner to the rescue. There was still no way the cover would come out though so I undid the rad, still no, so undid the bottom hose and dumped the coolant. That did it.
With the cover off I cleaned up the gaskets mating groove with a copper brush and then wet n dry. Ive used a heat resistant sillicon and bonded the gasket in, then lft it to dry out overnight.

That was a while ago huh?
The new gasket cured the oil leak and I've used the bike to blat about over short distance around London. I had one problem with the fuel hose, the bike didn't have an original so I just cut a length to suit. It was fine until the engine heat softened it, then it kinked and the engine would of course stop. I found an original hose from a 1WG ... it fitted ok and cured the kinking problem, but the internal dia was smaller. This meant the engine would die at the lights if I didn't catch it on the throttle ... eventually I had the time / inclination to change it. I got some rope eyes from a boating shop they're nylon so I could cut them. These reinforce the 90 and 180 degree turns so it doesn't kink and finally the bike doesn't stall or breakdown.
Just in time for a dickhead to make a U turn on Waterloo Bridge. I dropped the bike on the left, there wasn't a great deal of damage but enough of the unobtainable bits and a small dent in the tank to write it off

I was meaning to ask what was the outcome of the right turn numpty escapade.
What a fooking disaster on the write off front.
Did the other parties insurer cough up straight off or has that been a chow on.
Hope if there were any shiny bits you got to pocket them first.
I put some new replacement generic fuel pipe on one of the Fzrs last year and came out to the garage a
couple of months ago to find it had perished/split and a full tank of fuel on the floor.(it was the feed to the pump and tap not switched off..... DOH)
So the original Yamaha hoses are still holding up fine since 1989 but new hose lasts 18 mths.
Also 5 new pattern battery straps have perished and snapped after 18mths on some of the FZrs but 2 originals are still supple.
Also all the replacement brake bleed nipple rubber caps are split after the same time period,
Just goes to show what is quality.

Yup it was the same fuel hose on mine - I renewed the filter too and have to say the bike pulls cleaner than it did.
The guy was saying to the insurance company solicitors that I had hit the brakes and dropped the bike because of that. Well first off I used those goldfenn (?) pads and doubt those and standard brakes could lock the front on a dry road, second is the the amount of rubber on the fairing from his tyre

Them mirrors are not half as hard to find as the Genesis/2Tk one Laminator is still looking for.
Bastard about the screen brace; they seem a hen's teeth job.... mind I did link up a brand new one on the forum that was very cheap a few months ago.
It sold within hours and no-one on here posted up they bought it though.

The bike was valued by the insurance at £1250, that was the first offer but I didn't contest it. My excess was £50 and I bought the bike back for £400 so I got £800 payment.
It was Cat D write off - I've bought a screen from Skidmarx
Got a mirror brace from Taggy
I'll need to get the plastex out, clean the bodywork and repray the genny cover.
The tank will be a bit tricky
The bar and clutch I can take off my black bike ... that will get a few more bits on it

Even so..... its better than it being hacked to bits by a breaker...
Any forum member would be wise to buy it rather than spending on some that are doing the rounds at present
