Use an in-line fuse.

I'd suggest that if you don't know about this - that you get someone else to do it.

The fuse is simply inserted between the +ve output of the rect/reg and the +ve terminal of the battery.

Don't forget to check and clean/replace connector from alternator.
This can cause all sorts of problems
