Smoke coming from under seat

Post by subs75 »

Hi all, hope someone can help. Arrived home from work this afternoon to find that my nc23 was nearly on fire (!!). There was smoke coming from under the main seat - luckily I managed to frantically put it out before it got serious. On removing the seat cover, I found the source - on the left hand side of the seat frame there's some kind of square-ish metal box which was smoking hot.

Any idea what this is, why it happened, and what steps can be taken to fix? Can post pics if need be. Thanks in advance.

Thanks - I think you've hit the nail on the head. Any recommendations as to a good replacement part and source?

Yes Graeme France or David silver spares.
If your rectifier has got that hot then it is more than likely taken your battery out as well so replace both at the same time, also check the wiring to the rectifier as if it has got to the stage were theres smoke coming from it then it could have melted the wires together in a bit of a mess

OK, thanks people. I have GF's contact details.

Damn - I just wish I had known to check for this before it became a problem.

Just make sure you check that the wiring loom isn't overloading the reg/rec - I had a problem with my NC23 that I still don't fully understand. Too much juice was going through the reg/rec and it ended up starting to cook itself (a bit like was yours did it sounds like). I ended up putting a heavy duty reg/rec fuse in on a small extension loop. Did the job. The extra wire just tucks in under the battery strap.

Bit of a McGuiver effort, but I haven't had a problem with it in 3 years now.
Central Line in rush hour or the A40 by bike? - well Duh!
