Bike cutting out..... any ideas? NC23 (RRK)

Post by thunderbyrd » Sat Oct 17, 2009 2:43 pm

The problem goes like this:
that on starting it with choke (he's an old boy!), letting him run for a bit to get warm, I then climb aboard, switch the lights on, adjust choke - if necessary, put him into gear and then...... he cuts out! Now, anyone who doesn't know the foibles of "Ollie" thinks, oh stupid woman rider she's stalled the bike! Well, no actually, I haven't even had chance to let the clutch out yet! It's most annoying as I then have to go through a number of procedures in order to get him started again, switching the lights off and putting him back into neutral  , all time consuming and annoying to any traffic if it happens at the traffic lights....

He's been on a treatment, since last winter, of Silkolene FST every third or fourth tank and especially when the temps started dropping as we had a major problem last October of carb icing. I replaced the battery about 2 months ago (so that's not the problem). The headlight bulbs have been replaced for genuine Honda ones as the previous owner had non standard ones in that were drawing too much power from the battery - let alone the fact that they were too big for the holder and he'd cut the lugs!

The only other thing that someone has suggested to me that might be upsetting him is the restrictor kit (washers in the carbs) which has to be in until next August. As I can't/won't risk having the kit taken out to ride around to test for a bit, can anyone else make any suggestions what the problem could be?

Any help would be appreciated as I love my little Ollie very much but this bad behaviour needs to be sorted out or else I may need to take drastic action

Could it be something like a dodgy cut out switch on the side stand or gear lever? sounds like the sort of thing that would happen if I left my stand down an put it into gear with the engine running.

My guess is its part of the safety circuit too, check all connections at the side stand etc. Helps if you have a haynes manual or the electrical schematic to follow the circuit. Maybe a bad earth, i had a problem when i built my track bike due to that.

Chris.

Guys thanks for your suggestions. I have to report that my bike doesn't have a side stand cut out feature (don't think that Mr Honda had thought of that back in 1989! ;)

Any other suggestions graciously welcomed.

hi again, yep I just checked and it does not appear to have a side stand switch, but I think it does have a clutch safety switch, here, number 8 : http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cbr400rrk-nc ... F03-1.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Im no expert, but its maybe worth looking at?

just take the restrictors out, it wont change anything but its worth it ;) . took my a couple of hours and all i needed was a phillips screwdriver and an allen key to take the tank off. Haynes manual = life saver.

Clutch switch disables the starter motor - can't imagine it disables the spark since I don't think it's connected to the gears?

What are the plugs like?

Hey Wozza

I don't have a clue. The bike is now in serious trouble with me as it refused to fire up on Sunday when I needed it for a ride out. Will start just won't fire up. Battery is only 2 months old. Hubby got it started by bumpt starting it and, despite taking it for a relatively longish run, and leaving it to idle for a bit, when we turned it off it then wouldn't start again. So, it's off for it's winter holiday to our mechanics to be worked on at leisure and I don't want to see it until it's been fixed

I'm sorely tempted to resort to getting it sorted and selling it on in order that I can buy something newer as I will be commuting into Bath daily next year and really need something a bit lighter and more upright.

Few pointers:

Starter lock out diode is intermittent - £5
RHS switchgear failure very common - check for 12v on / off on coil packs - good used £15
Ignition pick up can show heat related faults - good used £15

Hope that helps.

I had this problem quite often with my 23..

I found that it was the clutch plates sticking..

While the engine is off try holding the clutch in and rolling the bike forwards.. it will probably be hard to start with but will get easier..

After doing this a few times try starting it up and doing the same again..

And then click her into gear! Should work..

Then again could be an electrical problem?
