Speedo no worky

Post by castrolnc23 »

The devil bike is playing up (again).

It seemed to object to me taking it round Rockingham unexpetedly as after I came back in the speedo stopped working.... oooo maybe I went so fast I broke it!

So anyhoo. Pulled the rubber bit out of the front sprocket cover and sure enough half the cable fell out. No worries a new one from Graeme arrived this morning.

Fitted it... doesnt work :|

I've checked the speedo drive (plastic thing inside front sprocket cover) and thats fine and dandy.

Not sure if this is right or not but when I attach the cable to the clocks I can pull the cable through the rubber housing fully out from the sprocket end, is that right?

I need to figure out whats wrong before I get flashed by a speed camera or pulled over by a cop car :(

Any ideas?

dont think so......

one good way to test the cable is to leave the sprocket cover end in as normal.
unscrew from the base of speedo and tape to nose cone where you can SEE the end.
slowly ride off, see if the cable end is spinning or not.
if not= buggered, get new cable
if it is.. cables fine, move on to next idea...

also... if you do need to change the cables... heres what i do. saves loads of time and frustration.

get a 5ft thin rope or flexi wire.
tie to one end of the speedo or clutch or throttle cable
undo the bottom end and slowly pull the cable out of the bike....
the rope/wire will replace where the cable went so you can see where it originally went
get new cable and tie one end of the cable already in bike.
slowly use the other end of rope/wire to pull through the new cable.

everything is kept in place, no hassles... well only if the rope breaks..

Cheers for your help LP, problem now defined.... the hole at the bottom of the speedo clock where the cable plugs in seems to be round rather than square, so the cable doesnt "catch" and isnt spinning inside the clocks... typical Devil Bike, couldnt be something cheap and easy to fix eh

So now I am in receipt of a new speedo hole thingy.... god, the thing where the cable plugs into the clocks.... so I fitted that...

Speedo no worky

So the list thus far:

New cable (tested, works fine), sprocket drive working fine, new speedo locator at bottom of clocks... speedo no worky... what the heck else can it be? :|
