Water pump removal - NC24

Post by magpie114 » Sun Nov 01, 2009 10:27 pm

I'm trying to remove the water pump on my NC24 but its stuck tight and won't move. I've removed the bolts and cover, I'm not missing something - am I? Anyway given it the wd40 treatment and am leaving it overnight. Are they usually as hard as this to remove and whats the best way to tackle it?

Yes, yes they are that hard to remove. :-/

Not sure about the NC24 specifically but typically you can be sure there is nothing left actually holding it in place when you can rotate it (if only a degree or so), but even then it won't want to come out, I've had to carefully pry them off in the past.

How strange... out of the 4 pumps i've had to remove they all came off really easily.

Maybe it is corroded in?

After you remove all the bolts it just pulls off, there is a rubber o-ring around the base of the pump to seal it.

All the engine oil will come out when you remove it though so make sure you've drained the block first, or you are at least tilting the engine.

You didn't miss any bolts did you?

Thanks for both of your suggestions and comments - I finally got it free. After the overnight drenching with wd40 I managed to get a slight rotation and patiently started to to turn it back and forwards until it loosened sufficiently to prise it off. Just a small amount of corrosion deposits on the shaft - so yes just a little corrosion was enough to hold it tightly in place.
