What gaskets need to be replaced when doing this task or can they be reused?

Not sure. I will start anywhere soon on my bikes...but I did get 2 new valve cover gaskets as spare (in case the fitted ones are faulty). NC30 & NC35 share the same part no.12391-MR8-000. Also got the gasket for the valve timing cover (o-ring), again both types same part no.91301-ML7-003. Or use liquid gasket bond such as Loctite blue silicon #5926, if the gasket(s) is still in good working order.

Did mine not so long ago and didn't need any new gaskets. The only gaskets you should come across are the ones in the rocker covers which are nice and thick rubber gaskets that should be fine. Worth giving them a check though... :mrgreen:

Finishing the valve clearance job tommorrow. Got new shims today (replace 7 pcs).
Checked the gaskets and seem to be fine.

Finished the DIY valve clearance job on monday, the carbs went back on the bike very easy!
No hassle with the carb rubbers. :peace: And the engine started at the second try on the start button.

My viffers finally in one piece and running fine but I've got a tapping noise from the upper of the front right cylinder. Apart from hanging on to revs on choke and idling a bit erratically it's running great. Is it worth doing the valve clearances? Judging by the nightmare I've had getting it even vaguely roadworthy I'm a little apprehensive.....ok so maybe I wake up screaming something about 12mm bolt heads and small hands. Erm, *cough*

NC24 looks easier than NC30 clearances...so get in there and do it. Your bike will love you for it :mrgreen:

Do the valve clearances and then balance the carbs.

Procedure wise it's identical to the NC30 (you'll have to rotate the timing marks in a different order as the crank is 180 as opposed to 360.

Instead of changing shims though the NC24 has adjustable tappets, slacken the locknut and turn as appropriate (see page 1 or 2 for apicture i posted)

Remember to always use 2 smaller gagues to make up the reuired thickness (avoids them bending)
