Engine out job.

The front pipes are probably rotted into the collector, they'll come out with a big mallet, but the rears won't come out without the engine out i'm afraid.

drain oil, drain coolant. remove fairing, remove tank, disconnect gear lever, remove sprocket cover / disconnect clutch and remove fromt sprocket / chain, remove front down pipes, remove rear endcan/linkpipe. disconnect oil cooler, remove rad, remove airbox, remove front ignition coils & leads, remove carbs, remove theormostat housing, disconnect rear plug leads and any other plugs wires. support engine with a trolly jack and unbolt the engine bolts. lower engine checking for stuck cables / pipes and raise frame / remove engine.

PITA job, soak engine bolts in plus gas and be prepared for the chance some bolts will be fused in so may snap. The thermostat housing bolts can be a pain, as well as the front lower engine bolts.

engine out job makes valve clearances easier so check / adjust them while its out.

How much are they charging for your collectorbox? Theres quite a few peopel on here that are after one. Message RCV4 as he's a high quality metal worker and might be able to knock you one up :)

It's the biggest problem with the NC24 besides the electrical system.

It is the part of the exhaust system that joins the front and rear together, it has the backpipes integrated into it.

Most of them are near rotten now and replacements are like rocking horse poop. Crap ones on ebay can easily fetch over £100.00

Since you have to take the entire bike to pieces to replace it (and its often a custom fabrication job) your looking around £500.00 including labour from most garages which effecitvy writes the bike off as even the best condition NC24 is worth only around £600-£700.

Neosophist cheers for all the info your being a great help,

the place is in ashford kent and if i get the bike to them with it ready to have the block dropped out of it they are charging me 250+vat for it made in stainless and then re fitted into the bike with the rest of the exhaust back on which im willing to pay as its my dads old bike and hes given it to me for my gf to have and ive been after it for years.

something about the sound it makes sends shivers up my spine if i could get the old one off i would have it welded but as its an engine out job i dont want to have to do it again in a years time when the old one goes again (its now 22 years old)

i know alittle about the nc24 as its been with my dad for newarly 10years and ive worked on it plenty but stuff like this i have no idea

ah speak of the devil! I mentioned you earlier on in the thread as somebody who'd be able to help ^_^

I have slip-on joints on one of my collectorboxes, it's soo much beter. Especially if u need access to the sump.

Do you have an NC24 collectorbox to work from? How many collectorboxes are you planning on making? Theres loads of people who are after them.
