My 2009 Winter Project

Post by Neosophist » Thu Oct 15, 2009 3:09 am

Some of you may have already seen the NC24 I had dyno'd at the dyno-day (lets call it the shed :) ).

Well since it ran 1/2 decent at the dyno day (54hp) it's now my winter project!

It's in pieces now, and I mean major pieces, the engines in more pieces than I can count and in a separate room than the frame..

So far i've found that the clutch platers are worn quite badly and the springs are a few mm shorter than the service length (this might explain the clutch slipping at high rpm)

Chain & Sprockets are trashed too, carbs were a bit off, so were the valve clearances. >.<

I reckon with some fettling it'll make closer to 60bhp. (We'll see after the rebuild)

The engine internally is quite clean, the valves are in good nick.

I'll get some pictures put up as time goes on of the rebuild.

Current plan is:

Minor Mods

Repaint engine.
Replace worn clutch/springs / chain / sprockets
Tune Carbs
Clean / Repaint frame / forks / discs

Major mod

Exhaust:

I have a couple of NC30 systems and a box full of NC24 parts, various bends, Y pieces etc etc. I think im gonna go for a dual setup, one exhaust each side, one to the front cylinders, one to the rears. I think im gonna stick with STD NC30 cans as there easier to mod to fit each side than the NC24 can. I've build a mockup today and it fits fine ^_^ just need to fabricate some hangar brackets.

Repaint:

Still yet to decide on a paint scheme, I have a spare set of OE honda panels but there trashed and need a repaint, something old school in keeping with the bike. (ie. one of the NC24 original schemes) I just can't decide.. somebody pick one for me!

Possible Mods

If I have time / money / motivation (I just spent a small fortune ordering many many replacment nuts and bolts from David Silvers, I have a zinc plating kit too but im too lazy!

Forks: NC29 forks / clip-ons / Yokes / Front Wheel with NC30 lowers / brakes. Pretty easy mod for the 24. self explanatory.

If I cant justify it i'll just stick an Aero front wheel in the NC24 forks, (110/70/17)

It'll never be worth much compared to an NC30 but I plan on making it look fairly decent (ie. new) with a few subtle changes. :)

Sounds good! I'd love to have an nc24 as a daily rider but they're pretty rare down these parts. They fit my wants for a small capacity do it all bike.

Will be interesting to see if 60hp is achievable. I don't know much about the 24, but I imagine the stock exhaust will be quite restrictive because of its design.

Neo: you sound competent when it comes to things mechanical, how about losing the cam quietening gears and other performance mods? ;)

little bit of porting work to go with the reground valve seats?

I am watching a 24 on the bay for a winter commuter....

I am going to have £650 +/- £200 to go on a moto in abotu 3 weeks.... (must buy a commuter, not another NC project..lol)

60bhp should be achievable, they were 60 brand new ^_^ it dyno'd 54bhp with rough carbs, knackered clutch and bad valve clearances... (looking at the graph it might have slipped a bit in one of the gears...) anyway with a bit of jetting and my new exhaust system (if i've done the math right) circa 60bhp should be no problem ;) It doesn't have a standard end-can on it (it had no end-can when i brought it) I just put whatever i had knockin around on it...

The gas flow from the standard end-can design is a work of art though!! It's quite restrictive imo, but then again these engines were designed to produced 59ps / 60bhp / 43kw whatever you measure performance in!

Good point about the cam-gears, i'd forgotten all about doing that, done it on another bike so thats no trouble!

That sort of work will come later on depending on how well it all runs after its back together. You should be able to pick up a half decent NC24 for a few hundred quid. There pretty bulletproof barring electrics and dodgy maintainacnce (its a honda afterall)

Brakes are weak unless looked after but once cleaned up are not bad! plus only having a top radiator they dont' tend to over-heat as theres no lower one to get clogged up! I guess the traditional firing order doesn't run as hot.

If you do get one I have loadsa bits, info etc ^_^

Image

If I can get it looking anywhere near as nice as my friends 24 i'll be happy. ^^

I've degreased the engine and scotchbrited the cases ready for repaing, i'll repaint the cam covers and side cases separatly.

Your friends NC24 there looks awesome

And I agree - that exhaust system is very rstrictive.

I'll look forward to this thread over the winter as I don't have my own one to do now :(

Who do you host your pictures with? as I can see them at work here which is great!

Cheers Smev 8-)

He also puts the 400Z kit on it for summer times ^_^

I'm still waiting on parts to arrive for the bike so i've not done an awful lot yet. Stripped the subframe ready for a repaint job tomorrow after I weld a plate onto it to take my R6 reg/rec.

I'll get some pics of that up soon

Minor update.

Due to the national postage system treating its workers like crap theres a postal strike on. Unfortuantly this has delayed my shiny new parts by several days.

So I got to work on the subframe.

For those that don't know the NC24 mounts the Reg Reg in the middle of the subframe which sits above the rear bank of cylinders (quite warm...)

My '05 R6 Reg/Rec bolt holes match the NC24 spacing but its too big to fit as it fouls the plug leads. So instead i've welded a plate onto the rear subframe to act like a heatsink and transfer some heat from the RR unit into the subframe.

As you can see in the first picture it's got rust too, quite a lot close up, also battery acid had leaked really badly after the old RR died and decided to boil the battery, the previous owner didn't seem to notice battery acid all over the bike.

After welding the plate (made of Stainless Steel) I rubbed it down and coated it with hammerite smooth silver. The finish is acceptable. Some more work would have made it 100% mint but it passes as equal to the original honda finish.

Before:

You can just about make out the rust. And the Collectorbox I cut up *wince* stll on the engine...

Intermediate:

Image

I've welded the plate on and rubbed down all the areas of rust. you can see a lot of exposed areas now.. this clearly shows the damage of the the rust and battery acid. Made the frame look really awful :(

After:

3 x Coated with Hammerite. Looks much better now.

The clutch springs arrived! I can't recall if I mentioned but DSS telephoned me to say that they could only get 1 clutch spring and did I want just the one!? Err...no!

Anyway.. 10% stronger EBC springs from Wemoto.. £8.75, £10.00 odd inc delivery.

The originals were worn out, they were 35mm long.. the new ones are 37.8mm

Factory specs...

Standard: 37.6mm
SL: 36.5mm

As you can see there of thicker wire too so hopefully no more clutch slippage..
