VFR 400 NC24-advice before buying

Post by martymcfly »

Hope to finally get me a VFR, found a cheap one. The bike is tatty but the engine sounds good, no smoke or rattles and sounds great. Has a slight misfire but has been stood. The exhausts do not blow and look sound.

Just a couple of issues wanted clearing up before buying. The rev counter does not work, the speedo seems fine. The neutral light has a mind of its own coming on between gears. Are these common problem/major issues??

Anything I should check before handing over the cash?

Check everything you would with any old motorbike;condition of tyres, condition of chain and sprokets, fork seals, head races, wheel bearings, oil or coolant leaks, brake operation, smoke or strange rattles from engine etc.The most expensive job you are likely to face is replacing the collector box partly because it is not cheap and partly because the engine has to come out so I hope the one on yours is in good condition. If you do buy it get it serviced and all faults rectified by someone who knows what they are doing and then you will have a fun and reliable machine which should last a long time.

Agreed. Don't buy it.

Major Bottomless pit of money that'll never be worth anything.

Save up the extra and buy an NC30.. better brakes / better suspension / better choice of tyres.
