Tri-Arm Crank Query

Post by DoktorMandrake »

Recently stripped down an NC23 engine for a bike I am building. The big end bearing had gone, so they will need replacing, but the crank bearing surface is scored (if you run your finger side to side over the bearing surface you can feel there is a ridge/ridges) so I don't know whether to get the crank reground (anyone know who does this and what the cost is?) or alternatively there is one I can get from a breakers that he seems to think is ready to fit/undamaged/has no scoring/grooves on the bearing surfaces but if I buy it and it's just as bad/crappy as the one I currently have it's a waste of money. I figure if getting the crank reground isn't too expensive I may as well go with that option and just get the one I have fixed.

What do you chaps/chapettes think?

Unless...does anyone on here have a crank for sale with good, smooth bearing surfaces? Also, if it's reground, how do I work out what shells I need?

Ta!

Hi for a regrind try

Won't be the cheapest but it will be good.
I expect Graham France will post an offer of one soon, or PM him.

As suggested - plenty in stock - short engines - full engines - cranks - all with a road use warranty.

Quickest to call for a deal.

When's a good time to give you a bell, Graeme? I'm working during the day, so are evenings/weekends ok?

Have sourced a crank, but no idea if it will be good enough or if I will be sending it back and buying one from you. Which may have been the most sensible option to begin with to be honest. I just haven't had the time to phone. I will though, as I imagine any other bits you have I will be taking off your hands. For starters, I think I'll need a new conrod for cylinder/piston 2, as the bearing surfaces are scored. Are they all the same weight? And a full set of big end and crank bearings is a must. And a gasket set. I am building the bike literally from the ground up. So hopefully you'll be able to help me out. Engine was a knackered freebee I am sorting out and I have a frame and swinger and bottom yoke and...nothing else. So I will need a hell of a lot of other parts before it's even half way complete. It's going to be a labour of love - will cost me probably about twice as much to put on the road/track as your average 23 costs to buy second hand. So any bits you have that I need, no doubt we can come to some arrangement.

If you let me know when roughly's a good time, I'll give you a call! Thanks again!
