Common problems with VFR 400

Post by Dimple »

I am based in South Africa and it is such a mission to get any race kist for this bike. I see some wicked bikes on this site. Can i maybe get some suggestions on what kits will fit on the VFR 400. Also is there any thing i need to watch out for that is common on these bikes.

http://www.tyga-performance.com/site/index.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.jap4performance.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.k-conversions.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

personally I would go for one of the top 2 before K conversions. I have a TYGA kit myself, I never fitted it, their parts are very good.

there are not any fairings that bolt-on directly to the VFR400, you can get the lowers from a RVF400 to bolt-on directly but thats the only thing that can be taken off any other bike and stuck straight on without any modification.
as the lads have pointed out Tyga and K conversions do kits that are designed for the VFR400 and bol-on after you drill out some of the holes.
do you wanna update the look of the bike or just get new fairings that look nice and shiney and new?

Dimple - from my limited experience but somewhat bad luck with mine i advise to look at the following:

Check the clutch (paddock stand required) stick it in gear and try and move the back wheel around, it should be near on impossible to move.

Check the fork seals and that the front and rear shocks do not "bottom out"

Check the brake pads and lines

Check the electrics look in good order and not butchered

Check the fan is working so the bike doesn't overheat

Check bearings in the wheels and head stock

Once you get the bike then give it a good service i.e. flush and clean the coolant system, put new coolant in, new plugs, oil filter, oil, change the fork seals, dust seals and replace the fork oil, Check the valve clearances and reset to correct clearances if required, Clean the carbs and have them balanced and depending on the the state of the hoses replace them with braided items with fresh fluid.
