NC30 jerky throttle, or just jerky owner????

Post by graham72 »

Hi all,
still getting used to my new baby after a way too long break from bikes (kids...marriage...divorce...etc...etc)
When I roll on the throttle at low speeds it jerks, doesnt seem smooth, more of an on/off switch!
Is this normal, or is it just the shite bloke sat on it??
Thinking it might be just me being used to a smooth throttle opening on my cars!
All advice welcome, cheers!

throttle cables might be stiff after not being used? try lubing them up, you could have a look at the throttle butterfly bit on the carbs, roll open the throttle and check that thats opening smoothly as well.

Hi it could be any one of a number of things, but most simple first have you checked your chain isn't too slack? Also check that the throttle cables/twist grip is nice and smooth in opening and closing.

could also be out of balance carbs or a cracked carb rubber..maybe...

Could be in your head as there is no cush dribe on an NC30 and it is snatchy and direct.

depends if you are talking the drive or the engine response?

Thanks for all the responses, engine response is fine, it runs sweet as a nut, well maintained by previous owner.
Think it might be me being a rusty old rider!
The chain does seem quite slack, it hits the underside of the swingarm very easily when pushed up by hand, but according to a trusty old ruler (I know, sad!) seems to be within advised limit!
Might just nip chain up a bit tighter and see if it helps at all.
I notice it mainly on roundabouts, not helping my confidence!!
Still love the bike to bits tho, its got character!! lol

mine is the same it feels snatchy on roundabouts and turning into T junctions and stuff, i tightened the chain a tad and it did improve a bit, also i adjusted the throttle slack at the at the grip, that plus being a lot smoother on throttle control to the point of anticipating the jolt has sorted the prob

When you adjust the chain check to see whether it has any tight/loose spots. You might not be able to adjust all of the snatch out of it if it's stretched in some spots.

Like Mark said they can be a bit snatchy because they don't have a cush drive. Very high quality chains are a must because of this in my opinion (cheaper chains just won't go the distance!).

 Useless fact of the week: Motogp bike's chains stretch 2" after first going out on them!! Taken from a motogp published book.
