Forks are pretty close to bottoming out into braking areas, and I'm not yet really braking late yet. Was talking to the previous owner of the bike the other night, and mentioned it looks like I'll need heavier springs. He said, yeah maybe, but before you go spending cash, try adding 10ml of 10W fork oil, it may well do the trick, even if it's just for now.

So, I have my fork oil, but not the knowledge on what I need to do with it! I'm not replacing the oil or seals just yet, simply adding a bit of fork oil. Can I just take the tops off and pour it in?

Forks are stock NC29 externals, think some work has been done inside, but not sure what.

Yes, you can easily can take tops off and and the oil. Think I recommend "hang up" front end to relax the springs.

But I personally think adding additional oil wouldn't add much compression.

Thanks Parus. You're probably correct, but it's all I have at the moment. Budget not quite up to new springs just yet. Even if it adds a little, that's better than nothing.

If your on a budget get some SV650 2003> springs

The standard oil level taken from the top of the fork is 105mm for the L & N models and 120mm for the R model with springs removed and compressed although no need to remove the damper rod if fitted. I just done mine for the first time, was easier than I thought and removed both and lacquered the forks a the same time, cant wait to get some new springs though as I dont think the oil change added much, but at least its done.

Right try this , your right bout adding oil. 10ml of oil added per leg will useually equal 10mm of travel in a 41mm fork leg ( NC29/23 etc) It ads to the hydrolic effect of reduced air gap in the fork. It should be done with wieght off the front end so forks at max length and so when you screw the tops on you trap the same amount of air above the oil. This does work it reduces the compressed fork travel.

Thanks Waza4. I'll be reviewing my budget at the end of the year (possibly from a debtors prison!) If possible, I'd like to go to town, Ohlins internals, etc. We shall see...

Cheers. I'll be looking at getting to grips with a whole pile of mechanical stuff over the December - Feb break, fork internals included. Wish me luck (if I don't have any, expect to see my post count skyrocket!)

Thanks mate. I just need something to keep me going till the end of the year. I changed my brake fluid on the weekend, and the old fluid was pretty ugly, so I suspect my braking performance may increase with the new fluid.

Whilst working on the bike this weekend, I noticed that the forks are really soft, I can get them to travel a bit with only a small amount of force. Don't think I'll be on it again till the race weekend of Oct 10 & 11, but I'll be around a heap of 400 riders then, so will be able to get some good advice on how it looks.
