HELP! strange problem with RVF

Post by bbcbr »

Hi, I have a '94 Honda RVF 400 recently bought, and all went well for the first 2 months...First time I started having problems...my low beam(headlight) went dead- turned out to be a problem with the switch on the left handle (the one for High beam)but before i sorted that out i just drove with the HB on for about 3 days...untill one evening it just wouldn't start...started only by pushing it- so battery went dead.. since then i've starded having problems more often... it just doesn't start, i have to push it every time...:(, could it be the spark plugs, the former owner told me that stock was NKG ER-10EH (for high temperature) and now it has NKG ER -9EH normal ones...
oh, and it also has a cooling problem..I ride it in a veeeeeeery busy trafic and it gets very hot, last oner put on a switch to turn on vent manualy ... it works with that, it keeps the temp at safe value, but i'm afraid that' what drains the battery (if i let it get to hot water starts coming out :( )

any ideas?

P.S. I drive it every day.. but that's no excuse for the problems....I hope

Sounds like you have a couple of issues on the moto there.

First one - you need to check your charging circuit - get a multimeter and see what the battery is charging at when at 5k revs. Have a nosey around on here and you'll see this is a common issue to sort out.

Plugs - ER9EH is standard. ER10EH are for racing people...you can kill them easy for both types and many a problem is resolved by a new set of plugs.

Cooling - the lower rads can become full of shite. get it off, clean it and see how it goes from there. ALso, you can test the fan and fan switch when you are doing all of this.

It would only be a couple of hours in the garage for you...get crackin

Welcome to the site too - this is the place to be. We'll sort you out 8-)

Already checked battery.... it's charging ok... :(

I'll look into the rads problem....I wanted to take it to the mechanic... but I don't really trust them around here...

Hope u understant what I'm writing ... I'm not english  so maybe a few mistakes here and there
