more nc30 fun! (lights this time)

Post by rich1988 »

went out on my bike t'other night and put the full beams on, it was raining lightly more of a mist than a rain which made it a complete pain in the arse to ride especially when people come the other way and all the beads on your visor refract all the light from oncoming traffic who dont have the decency to dip their sodding lights rendering your eyes totally useless which sends you into a blind panic gripping the handle bars for all dear life

ANYWAY the issue is that my dipped beam of the H4 bulbs have stopped working, I can have parking lights or full beam but no dipped (put it onto dipped the lights dont change unless you push the main beam button on) just wondering if this has happeend to anyone or how I might fix it,

thanks chaps

If a UK NC30 then the relay has probably gone, if not then its a common fault, especially if 55/60w bulbs are fitted, the switch melts.

You can take it apart and carefully shave the melted plastic so that it works again or replace it.

It then will do it again some time in the future unless you put in a relay. Do a search here for details on how to do that.

Yes 100w bulbs would do it *especially* if not a UK NC30 and no extra relay fitted!

By UK NC30 I mean UK 'spec' rather than 'in' the UK, most NC30's in the UK are Japanese spec.

Yes I do mean the little red push button on the left handlebar.

If it is UK spec then I believe the relay is next to the clocks (on the right), next to the High beam relay, if not then you've almost certainly fried the switch and with ~130w over and above you might not even be able to fix it. Undo the two screws underneath, the two halfs should split then take apart from there.

Non UK NC30's don't have a low beam relay and the switch is barely up to the original bulbs (70w total IIRC) let alone 2*100w monsters!

yea i have got it, we are doign clutch cable and carbs so can check this out at the same time, if it only has relay next to lights its still jap spec and I probably need a new relay? (thats a hi beam relay) and I remove my stupid hi powered bulbs :D, if its uk spec I can swap the two over from what i understand to test which one is working and replace accordingly!

No, if it only has one relay you've got a Jap spec and you've (most likely) fried the switch.

On the UK bikes the load is handled by the relays, one for Hi, one for Low. On the Jap bikes the load is handed by a relay for Hi but Low is handled by the switch which cannot cope and melts.

If you'd lost Hi beam then it would be a case of replace the relay but missing low beam is most likely fried switch (extra crispy possibly with 100w bulbs).

The relay isn't made of plastic!

Plus it's designed for more watts in the first place and doesn't get as much use as the low does in the switch.

Grr done a bunch of other jobs on the bike today but one of the screws in the left hand switch pack is rounded off and stuck fast which is VERY annoying :P going to have to try a screw extractor on it or drill it out, which is nice and annoying
