Touring with an NC30

Post by Chaosfruitbat »

Oh look, its my first post :)

I've been wanting an NC30 all my biking life, and have been without a bike for over 5 years now, after selling my beloved original model Fireblade. I've decided that its finally time to get one!

As with all things in life, there is a small downside. A friend of mine is persuading me to bike down to Italy next year to watch the motogp, and something tells me that an NC30 is going to need filling up every 15 minutes on the way down.

Any of you done any long distances on one of these lovely machines?

Ive done 450 miles and had to fill up just under 4 times. (I started with about 1/4 tank. LOL)

I certainly wouldnt recommend Touring of any kind on an NC30. they are just not made for it. If your putting Luggage on the back etc the Rear shock will take a hammering, and so you should ideally set it up for the weight that you will be riding with to avoid any problems. Im pretty sure you will be quite worn out on the NC30 by the time you get to Italy. Assuming you might ride pretty hard whilst on the Continent, it would be good advice to take a comprehensive spares package with you as its hard enough getting parts for these machines over here in the UK. Some new Brake Pads, perhaps some spare throttle, clutch and Choke cables would be good advice because if either of these break, its a long and arduous journey home for you!!
The bike shouldnt need any Oil on the trip, but its good advice to Change the oil and filter before you go, and to change it again when you get back, dpeending on how many miles you have covered and how it was ridden.

Make sure your brake fluids are all good, and I would honestly put some tyre SLime in the tyres to potentially avoid problems in the middle of nowhere. I know a lot of people recommend AGAINST Tyre slime, but honestly.. it isnt that bad and Does help against punctures and keeps the tyre pressure consistant.

Depending on what tyres you have and what condition, you may be advised to put some new ones on before you go. Will your current tyres last another 1000Miles?? Have a look and see.

Frantically Lubricate the chain a few times before you go and take a small tin of Lube with you and keep it under your seat. make sure you have the Tool kit under there too..

Erm, what have i missed??? Erm....

Charge the battery before you go...

erm..

Just generally give the bike a good going over and check things before you go, remember some spare bulbs for your headlights and Brake lights too..

um...

That should just about do i think. LOL

If you do decide to go touring on a VFR, Good Luck. your a brave soul. LOL (Not that the bike cant take it, it will of course, but it wont be happy with the weight and your arms/back are gonna kill you sooner than you think!)

I did

I had the original black with bronze graphics model, and i loved it, but got a new girlfriend who 'convinced me' that we would be better off without it. Wont make that mistake again.

I rode my RWB 89 NC30 from Cumbria to the Valencia Moto GP. No problems at all, also went to Assen Moto GP on a separate trip.

My preparations were, new oil & filter and a lubed chain. I had new chain and sprockets at the time.

I carried chain lube / tool kit under the seat and a tyre foam puncture repair kit.

My Dad came with me on his NC29, again faultless.

BT92's hold up pretty well for long distance, BT090's don't ;)

Unless you are particularly small of stature then it is going to be seriously uncomfortable and you are not going to be taking a lot of luggage or bringing back much cheap booze. For long distance continental touring you cannot beat a BMW with its 200 plus miles to the tank, big panniers,no chain to adjust, and as comfortable as your old armchair.
