For spike - fitting an alloy zx7r seat unit

Post by thefatman »

Here you go spike, a few pics of how I fitted a zx7r subframe to my bike. Its an easy swap to do and saves quite a lot of weight. Theres nothing complicated about it, just a bit of chopping and in it goes.

The bottom mounts at the front go straight on, then you can line it up at the correct angle and drill new holes for the top mounts. There is a rivetnut on either side that needs to be drilled out first of all. The petrol tank mount i turned over and put a bolt through it to mount the tank onto. The slots on each end had to be lengthened slightly as the subframe is pinched in a bit at the top mounts compared to on the zxr. You could weld a nut onto it instead to do this, i'd also think about making a new mount out of a piece of alloy bar as the zxr one is a heavy piece of steel.

You can chop the complete back section off for a race bike, i've left it there as mine is a road bike and its nice having plenty of space for luggage. The lower tube on the left side wasleft longer to mount the can hanger to. I've just fed the standard wiring loom through the subframe, but on a race bike you could shorten it and get everything bolted in and around the battery box area.

shit hot mate, I was just gona get in contact with you as iv got mine on, lower bolts on but about to drill upper.

is the tank mount the one originally off the zx7 that goes in the first set of riv nuts?

the oly other thing was to get the coil mounted right the hide some wiring in their then get some brackets welded on for the rear seat unit mount bolts

cheers for the pic's il post some of mine wen its done and see how light I can make it, o its cost me £40 posted for mine so far but can sell the rear bit that bolts on and the rear undertray so should come out a pritty cheep mod

hhmmm if this is for your race bike spike, would not chopping down the rear of a standard nc one to remove the supports needed for a pillion save just as much weight?

I like the adventurous side though, its always helpful to see what can be done and any helpful weight savings and how to guides, good job guys
