NC30 rear lights

Post by SimNC30 » Fri Jul 31, 2009 12:36 am

I was in the the garage tonight and noticed that when I had the ignition and lights on, that the rear left light was out. The last time I had the bike running was three days ago and know it was working then because i remember starting it, flicking the lights on just before it got on it and walking behind the bike to pick up my helmet. I checked the bulb tonight and it looks fine, and none of the fuses are out. The NC30 doesn't have some bizzare function where it only lights one rear bulb when the engine hasn't been started but the ignition's on? Both brake lights still work absolutely fine. Have i most likely got a faulty connection somewhere? Are there any known electrical gremlins that tend to affect NC30s?

Thanking you!

Si

Where to start?! Yes there are a few....

Your tailight problem is most likely caused by a loose connection. If you take the pillion seat and tail unit off you'll see there are a couple of electrical bullet connectors for the tail lights. These come undone easily and can cause your symptoms.

A blown globe element could also be responsible, but unlikely if it looks to be ok.

Just swap the bulbs over, if its the other side that goes out, then you know its the bulb. If not its a dodgy connector on that side.

I will bet £100 on it being the Left Hand Switchgear.

Take it apart, (Very Carefully) and clean it up, liberally spray with electrical contact cleaner and splash a bit of WD40 on it. You should find that it works again once its put back together correctly.

I had this exact same problem, found nothing wrong with the Bulbs or Connections. I took the Action as above and Voila.. Perfectly working electrical system!!

I swapped the bulbs over and and found out it is the bulb - it must be on it's way out because it only stops working some of the time. Replaced both rear bulbs and everything is as it should be. I did come close taking the switch gear apart but thankfully didn't have to, although i'll remember that for next time.
