living with an nc29
hi folks, i was just wondering how everyone else gets on with theres. like whats the best cruising engine speed for around 30,40 and 70 mph ect withough labouring the engine, to achieve optimum echonomical fuel consumtion.

Just ride a speed limits.
Get it into top and you'll get better consumption but it could cost you more as you may not make the next bend from being in the wrong gear.
Its a SPORTS bike and needs to be ridden using the gears. 120 miles should be easily doable per tank full in normal riding but on track expect 60 - 70 riding the bike how it was designed to be ridden

im just not used to riding revvy bikes having rode twins, if im cruising over 8 grand i always think im thrashing the thing. im sure the engine can more than take it though right? i dont know how highly strung these engines are, or reliability.

Cruising at 8k is fine mate, on the track you would be spending most of the day above 10k and be fine...

ahh now i can see where your coming from.
i used to own a V4 400 and i was the opposite, never got used to the tall gears, never felt like it wanted to be revved up or ridden hard. got rid after 6 months!
CBR400s are some of the highest revving bikes on the market inc modern bikes. Honda have always made bullet proof bikes/engines.
parts and information are easy to find esp from this site.

Anyone here remember the MVX250? No way could you ever describe that as a bullet proof bike or engine. No way.Honda have always made bullet proof bikes/engines.

Completely off topic I know but Honda has a littany of disastrous engines through their early days. Suzuki and Yamaha are still sending lemons out (not to mention some european manufacturers recently - although a lot of them are first gen).

The redline might have been impressive in their day, but not anymore for the capacity. You'll easily get most 15 year old 4 cylinder 4-stroke 250's revving over 18000 rpm (the zxr250 redlines at 19000 with more to go!).
And the '09 ZX6r redlines at an indicated 16,500...
@CBR_veze: Cruising at 8000 rpm is ony just 55% of the way to redline, that's quite low revs for these bikes! When you realise how much abuse these engines can take in racing and track form you'll see that this cruising speed will do no harm to your engine.

thats wicked, well ive seen one go round ,mallory, i think it was with thundersport gb and it wooped the arses of everything else, sv650s and the like it was ace. mallory is perfect for little powerbikes, roll on track day!!!!

Thats one of the things I cant get used to, as I've never owned a bike that revs so high, max being 81/2 thou, so when around town i tend to change up really early, maybe lower than four thou, trying to keep the noise down in case i annoy someone. This is because as you know these bikes sound very, very deep at low revs and its only when you go above six thou that they turn into a raging tiger. While coming home from work on a morning I go through a crowded but quiet echoy shopping centre and everyone turns when they hear this quiet but deep rumble glide through. I have actually only been upto the red line once or twice in any gear, usually change at ten thou, its fast enough for me.

yeah i find the same, if im pottering around, i change at about 4-5 grand. strange isnt it.
