carb set up
Last week i removed stripped and cleaned my carbs.
After replacing them this weekend, the bike is now running like a sack of shite.
I followed the directions in the haynes so I can't understand why the bike is now running so poorly.
It started with no problems and seemed to be riding nicely enough for a few miles, but then it started smoking, running rough and cutting out at idle.
My only thought is that i did something to the carbs to affect the fuel/air mixture, which is causing my problems.
Is there any set up procedure i can go through without having to keep replacing and removing the carbs continuously to get the right set up? baearing in mind that i'm no expert in these matters!!

Unless the pilot screws or balance screws have been changed, there's not many settings you can muck around with to change the fuelling. Unless you've left jets out...
Check that the carbs are seating properly also, any small air leaks will cause it to run crap.

So how do I go about setting up the carbs, so that they're right first time (if possible) and like you say needn't come out again?

Set the pilot screws to 2.25 turns out, and give them a balance using the physical ('drill bit') method. Set the float height (in the Haynes). That's about all you can adjust without replacing parts.
It would be worth checking while you have the carbs off that the pilot and main jets aren't blocked.
Make sure they're properly seated by checking each carb properly (my bet would be on this as being the problem!), with a torch if needed. You shouldn't be able to see the groove/barb on the bottom of any of the carbs, it should be well down in the carb rubbers.
Put the front 2 carbs in gently first (not all the way), then push them into the rear cylinders. Check carefully to see if they look good, then push them down to hard to mount properly (I stand on them to make sure...). Alternatively, you could buy new carb rubbers, apparently it makes it much easier than this...

beofre checking your carbs over just make sure that it hasnt done a plug in its easy to flood a cylinder after messing around and the plugs wont recover unless cleaned if your lucky or replaced. It hapends often you end up flooding the a cylinder slightly on start up as your putting carbs on and off. That would explain a smokey exhaust if a cylinder is down, it can sometimes be intermitantly or perminantly when a plug has gone down.
If posible start the bike for about 2 mins reving ocaisionaly ( keep it running) then turn it off wet ur finger tips and very fast touch each down pipe in turn if a cylinder has failed that down pipe will be much cooler and not hiss when u touch it its a handy trick and saves hours of messing around. BE REAL CAREFUl just tap the pipe quick and pull ur fingers off, i have suffered some nasty burns doing this. Just try looking for the simple things first chances are u have a tiny obstruction on the float needle causing it to flood a cylinder happends often after disturbing things.
