No Electrics WTF! Saga continues!

Post by mattjc » Mon Jul 13, 2009 5:12 pm

Well I have just about had it with the wife's NC30, I got home Sunday morning after a night out with mates looking forward to a relaxing day with the kids, the wife sets off to work and I start getting the kids ready for a trip to the park... 30 minutes later the wife calls saying she's run out of petrol, Can I help? (bloody fuel tap!) So kids in the car petrol tank at the ready, petrol station done, then the a little bleep - Message Received "No Electrics at all", another petrol station I grab a pack of fuses - i'll not be beaten!

I get to the wife's bike parked on someone's driveway so not wanting to upset the owner I move the bike into a little cul de sac with a kiddies play area (convenient) so that's the children sorted at least, off with the back seat and the fuses are all fine? Why then can't I see any lights or life when I hit the start button? Off with the fairing (thank God for the bicycle tool kit in the glove box) check all connections - looks fine? So confused even more now I dress the bike, I'll consider myself defeated. So I sit down on the bike and hey presto the lights come on? It starts? It must be me I wash and polish this thing like it was my own - get off so the wife can ride it home, she gets 10 yards and it starts to misfire makes some horrible noises and dies - No electrics, back to square one...

Any one with ideas? Please!

Sounds to me like a loose earth I would be looking at the one that is the neg lead from battery and earths just below the seat if not then possibly a reg/ rec failure.

Hmm, dodgy main fuse? Right hand side just behind your knee? Worth a look.

I've had very similar problems once and it was the NC30 holy trinity of battery, alternator and reg/rec.

The haynes manual has some easy checks that will show if these components are faulty.

could be a few problems, but,if the battery voltage is ok then it rules out charging issues.a bike will run without a reg/rec and alternator so long as the battery has enough power.it won't run for long though but a good while.

it sounds like a poor connection of some sort, check battery terminals and in and around the main fuse.

Well the saga still continues, having left Silvia Black (that's the her name, believe me when I say I have a few more coming to mind) were she broke down and a couple of calls and 40 quid she was picked up by a friend of a friend with a flat bed recovery truck only to find a parking ticket and a notice to remove sticker on it I suppose we're lucky we got there first... so I arrange to meet the recovery friend of a friend at my brother in laws place of work (he's a motorcycle mechanic so the bench's and tools will come in handy) so I can use a bench and tools for some after work tinkering, I arrive early and get the huge nail pulled out from my front tyre and plugged, then about 30 mins later the truck arrives so I walk round to meet the driver who has begun tilting the back then BANG followed by 'F@£KING C**T W£%KER, BOLLOX C**T... and a whole lot more! Silvia now lying on her side with broken fairing, I didn't look for any more damage I don't want to know all will revealed in my wednesday after work marathon, atleast V$Chris's Infill panels survived.

On top of that she starts like there was no problem the day before. I dread to think what else could happen, so after that I rode my NC30 with it's newly plugged front tyre home like I was on a push bike...

Thanks for all your reply's i'll be checking all suggestions on wednesday evening!

Well turns out the earth cable from the battery negative had snapped - hence my fat ass made the connection when I sat on the bike, wednesday night was alright, my brother in law went round the bike with his soldering iron (amazed how much he had to do), took the manual fan switch out, and went round all the hoses (the rubber was cracking at the joints on most of them), while I spent the evening with plastex repairing the damage done by it's drop (I love this stuff it's is sooo good).

Still not running right though - a new symptom maybe? it'll idle at about 1300-1500 rpm then all of a sudden it'll just cut out, if you pull up at lights you have to keep the throttle open a little or it'll conk out - any ideas on this? Also seems to be hesitant when pulling away nothing them whoosh your off again it's asking for more fuel as it feels like it'll stall.

Thanks again people.

The spill may have disturbed some gunk in the bottom of the carbs and / or tank and now its clogged up your jet(s). I've had it happen before...
