Re: Work in Progress
ah the old battle with the carbs again. as the boys have said go for the front in place and then just body weigth and a flat bladed screwdriver to ensure the rubbers dont fold in on themselves. i do like Kenny's idea, sounds like the cure to the problem.
you will get some conselation in knowing that is gets easy with time, i can whip mine on and off in now time now.

Re: Work in Progress - Battle Over
Hey All,
So today I won the battle with the carbs and you know what it was a sinch - how you might ask?? Well I took the rear carb rubbers off the engine and got them onto the carbs, then popped in the front (which were already easy to get in) and now that the problem rear rubbers were on the carbs I could line them up with the engine ports easier (as there was a little movement in them) one firm push and pop on they went job done in 30mins! I can't beleive I battled with them for 4hrs last Sunday!
Anyway, I set about putting on my throttle cables and found I had no adjustment left in the return cable so I've done away with it, I take it that this I won't have a problem with the MOT on this?
I've now got the air box and rads on now I can see the home straight

Re: Work in Progress - No Gear Changes beyond 3rd?
So I've been beavering away at the bike and came to putting on the rearsets today and have hit a brick wall and I have the sinking feeling this might be BAD!!! I've got the gear side on and I can change down to 1st through neutral upto 3rd but it won't go past 3rd!!! I physically can't move the pedal up anymore .. can anyone help (I've checked the forum but can't find anything that ties to this problem).
Nothing un-toward has happened to the bike i.e. when I had been using it the gears worked fine and the bike has not been dropped. Since last use "over a year ago" it's been up on the stand with no real activity going on (gear change wise). The bike is dry i.e. there is no oil in there - the reason for this is I've nearly got everything done bar putting on the fuel tank, putting in the oil and water and switching her on.
I am praying that the gears have not fooked up because it would mean going back to square 1 - please help

Re: Work in Progress
Get some oil in it mate. Also make sure your dots on the linkage and the shaft ine up perfectly.
It will be right...but not without some oil to lubricate the gearbox

Re: Work in Progress
Late post as I've had network problems and been working to resolve them.CMSMJ1 wrote:Get some oil in it mate. Also make sure your dots on the linkage and the shaft ine up perfectly.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up CMSMJ1 - my thought process was to take off the clutch cover and the gear selector and check these didn't find anything unusual there I then played around with rearset and found that I'd put the selector on upside down meaning it was in race pattern shift - I switched this around and fettled with the front sprocket whilst depressing the gear change pedal and low and behold problem solved I located all the gears PHEW!
On the progress front there has been a fair bit although I am camera less at the moment hence the topic has been photo shy so no incremental update photos I'm afraid the next photo will most likely be that of the complete bike without the new paint job.
I spent a while locating the tank breather hose which was a pain in the a$$ because I'd already put the air filter on and need to remove that to get it done - after about five attempts I had the hose in the right place. I've now got another problem in that the fuel pipe is too short - anything specific I should note when buying a new one?
Incidently I hooked up the battery and flicked the switch and there is life there, I've got a blown passing light but the high/low beam works fine - where can I get one of those tiny bulbs? Also when pressing the passing switch what is supposed to happen as it's never worked for me.

Just read all of this and it is inspiring the amount of hard work an effort that has been put into this!
Hope it comes out as well as you deserve!

Re: Work in Progress
Cheers v3locity I have to say it's been a real labour of love working only 2/3hrs on a weekend for the last 1yr and half some times I've looked at it and thought why have I bothered and oh what a nightmare but now I'm nearly there and hopefully the end result will be a good one. Have to say I missed my target of this summer oh well will have to keep it under wraps until next year but at least we have this site to maintain the enthusiasm - in fact I owe a lot to 400gb for helping me maintain that!v3locity wrote:Just read all of this and it is inspiring the amount of hard work an effort that has been put into this!

On that note can anyone tell me the i.d. bore of the fuel hose it's not listed in the microfiche and I haven't got time to check want to order it before the weekend.

Re: Work in Progress - Dead as a DoDo
Ok so I didn't get any replies about the fuel line but I picked one up and everything is sorted on that front.
Last Sunday when I flicked on the ignition I verfied all the lights were working (some were blown but I've resolved that too) Anyway, today I finally treated the bike to some fresh "ahem" Thames Valley water and 3 litres of the finest oil "Motul" - now the sparks are brand new (gaps checked before install), the carbs are prestine clean, no issues in with the airbox or fowled cables etc etc. So I flicked on the ignition all the idiot lights were working "check", main beam good "check" fingers crossed (for the first start since the build) "check" and ignored the fact that today is the 13th!
Anyway, nothing happened - I heard a click from the rear end (assume the starter relay) but everything went dead no idiot lights nothing - effectively all the power was zapped as soon as I hit the starter button. I've scanned through the posts main culprit seem to be batteries. I checked all the obvious stuff i.e. loose connections, earths and fuses everything checked out. I hooked up my battery to the Accumate and sure enough it registered dead - however it is showing charged (only took 2hrs) - I don't have a voltage meter suspect I should get one right? Where should I start to decipher the problem? Would love to get her ready for the paint job this coming weekend.
