Tail section repair
Am looking to purchase a new tail section for my RVF 400 been looking on the david silver
website and have noticed that i have the following.
Fairing lower section is NC 35 RT
Fairing middle section is NC 35 RR
Tail section is not the one shown which is RR so i take it must be RT.
i removed mine the last time home and it was in one section but see on the david silver website you have LH and RH sections, also have 2 seats also.
Any advice on repairing the above would be great i am new to bikes and have not much experience in repair jobs.
It is a grey import 1997 P Reg. was told by the friend i bought it from that it is RVF 400 R ?

Re: Tail section repair
Re the David Silver tail sections :
As your tail-unit is a one-piece - that means it’s an aftermarket job. The OEM tail sections are two-piece with a provision for pillion seat, plus what’s known as an “H” piece, a.k.a “fairing tail-light cover cowl”.
RR & RT models are dated ’94-’95 and ’96-onwards, respectively.
Given that you have a set of mix and match fairings, despite the fact that it should be in RT colours it might be expensive to re-buy OEM panels to suit.
There should also be a provision for a locking mechanism to secure the pillion seat on the rear subframe, which may have been removed to fit a single seat unit – so worth checking?
Depending on what bits and pieces you’ve got – if you want new – it might be prohibitively expensive to go down the OEM route.
Unless your panels are in a pretty poor state, you might want to think about an aftermarket decal-kit instead, or a combination of decal kit + aftermarket single seat unit.
There’s plenty of information on kits/decal sets and opinions on quality on the site, so have a shufty around.
Good luck.

Re: Tail section repair
Have been sent some pictures from David Silver and my bike is the RT model got that bit wrong with the fairing.
The key to unlock the pillion seat was fixed with a jubilee clip so we filed the hole bigger so it could flip over it when removing.
There is a crack starting to form on the back LH side beside the tail light and there are some marks beside the pillion key.
From David Silver the new Tail sections will cost £125 each side and the fairing tail light cover cowl £30.
Will these be all i need to replace the tail section.?
Just cant picture how all of these will fix together on the bike ?
Before when i removed them i can just remember maybe 2 bolts and 2 screws holding the back light on and the pillion key holding the tail on.
Thanks for your help much appreciated

Re: Tail section repair
Here’s a link to the parts manual, you’ll be able to see how it goes together (F-15 I think?). Beyond the panels you can check which bits you’ve got, and which might be missing.
http://akhara.com/nc30/nc30manuals/RVF4 ... Manual.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Panels aside, for the nadgery stuff, you might want to check with Rick Oliver on this site – I think he can get most parts a bit cheaper – plus he can give you the low down on any part numbers that may have been superseded since publication of the fiche..
Not sure where you’re based, but if you’re planning on getting the OEM parts, and still feel unsure about how it should all go together - they’re a pretty helpful bunch on this site – I’m sure someone nearby would be happy to give you a hand….
I take my hat off to you for going original; hope your little RVF appreciates the love!

Spot with the link
once i get back from work will have a good look at what i need and hopefully it should keep me busy over this winter.
Line in the north east of scotland so we'll see what happens over the next few months.
in your opinion would you say the rest of the fairings would be after market aswell ?
Bike getting stripped down this winter and cleaned out good also gettin wheels powdercoated too.

Re: Tail section repair
It’s petty easy to spot OEM panels – most obvious is that they should be plastic, so no GRP “weave” internally. Honda will be moulded in colour plus decals – not painted. There are other aftermarket plastic panels appearing (Chinese) – but Honda will have a recognisable part number stamped somewhere on the inside.
Unlike imitations, the luxury of a nice original panel is that they’ll fit like a glove, and dependant on the panel will have heat-foam and infill tabs/guides applied/moulded-in. You’re lucky to have the NC35 as Honda panels for both marques are still available (for now) – NC30 covers are getting as rare as an honest politician.
Shame you’re so far North, I’m on Cheshire/Staffs border, so not exactly within ‘popping-over’ distance.
Sounds like a fun winter project – would be nice to see ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures.
Good luck with it.
