Hey all,

Been meaning to register and join in the chat for a while, but the week I get round to it, someone knocks me off my NC30 so I might not even be an owner much longer! :(

Oh well, decided to post anyway - figured you never know, the price of fairings might suddenly come crashing down so it might not be a write off after all...
(fingers crossed!)

sorry to hear that T but more than likely it's a wrie off ,in which case you can still buy it off the insurance company and still get a reduced rate for it which will mean you'll still have some money to put it right ,thats what i did lol

If your bike is written off I'd definitely think of buying it back and sorting it out. Fairings in various condition can be sourced fairly easily, though mint ones are like hens teeth. All in all it could mean cheap biking.
How hard can it be?

Thanks for info. Have had the estimator round and you guessed it - a write off! I'd love to keep the bike and do it up again but doesn't the bike get recorded as a write-off which in turn affects insurance and MOT -- as in, I wouldn't be able to get any?

It only affects the insurance as far as a further pay-out is concerned, they won't give you the full book price. MOT makes no difference it just has to be road worthy.
It will be registered on the log book (v5) as an insurance loss but as the value isn't that great that wouldn't bother me. There are several catagories of 'write-off';
cat A; it will have to be crushed,
cat B; can be used for spares only, and not put back on the road,
cat C; you will need a VIC check at your nearest Vosa test centre, this is just a quick ID check and takes no loger than five mins (they will charge you £40 then give you your log book)
cat D; repair and put straight back on the road.

Yours will probably be in the last two catagories. Don't worry about the VIC check, it's a simple proceedure.

What damage is there? Could you maybe even repair the fairings rather than replace, and then re-spray them?? Could be a cheaper option.

Thanks for the insurance category details -- was never sure which letter was best/worst so fingers x'd it a Cat D then! About the damage, from what I can see it is...

- cracks and/or scratches to every bit of fairing except the front mudguard and v-piece
- seat mounting broken
- fairing mountings broken (where the crash bungs were mounted)
- screen brace bent
- handlebar end and brake lever scuffed
- left footpeg bent (hopefully just the footpeg/gear lever and not the whole rearset)
- mirror scuffed
- exhaust scuffed (it was the original stainless steel one too!)
- very thin film of oil above one of the fork seals

...looks like I need to learn how to fix a few more things than I first thought -- and that doesn't even include checking anything under the surface (engine etc...but I think these are alright)
