Just got an NC30 - couple of questions

Post by ybanrab »

Hi all,
a number of people on this forum were kind enough to give me advice on buying a VT250 Spada a couple of years back, which still gets me about admirably, but whilst I was here I stared looking at NC30s and thinking 'OOooooo'. So now I have a basket-case NC sat in a garage which I found cheap on eBay and I'm in the process of getting it roadworthy. Mostly it's standard stuff, new tyres, new rear brake hose (the old one had come loose and the rear wheel wore through it!) but running it with the fairing off revealed that the exhaust was blowing where the downpipes from the front join the rest of the exhaust system:

It's the far pipe in the photo. It looks like the only bit of the system that isn't stainless has rotted through. What I'd like to know is:
Is this a standard exhaust system?
Is there any way to fix it?

Another thing I noticed was that the brakes at the front are mounted with the logo facing inwards:

Is that normal?

Final thing (for the moment I'm sure) is that the left rearset appears to have rubbed against the swingarm and removed about 1mm of it:

I think that it's not deep enough to worry about, but I'd love to know if you think otherwise.

Thanks for any help you can give

Hi,

Exhaust: Standard yes Id say so. They usually rot there, and is relatively east to fix if off the bike. I repaired mine on the bike with gum gum silencer bandage, gun gum fire paste and an exhaust clamp over the top for good measure :D . Looks messy but I bought a full system after so wasnt bothered. Alternatively a welder can weld it up.

Brakes: Yes as far as I remember from my '30. But my '35 has different calipers so cant confirm. Almost certain its fine though as it has been asked before.

Brake Line: I have a good one from left overs of when I had the '30. PM me an offer.

Swingarm: Looks like classsic crash/drop damage. All 3 of my V4 hondas had it (2x '30's 1x '35) all 3 been dropped/crashed that side, and seem many very similar too. Mine is more than 1mm and seen many very nasty gouges too. Dont worry about it (unless your a cosmetic perfectionist)

1) Exhaust:
Looks like a standard exhaust to me, someone here offers rebuilding the clamps for quite a reasonable price.

3) Swingarm:
Looks more like boot wear rather than the rear sets (but that could just be the angle), doesn't look enough to worry about.

Hiya, thanks for the reply.
Exhaust. I thought that might be the case! It looks bandage-able, so I'll do that. I like the idea of putting a clamp over it. Should make it a bit stronger and perhaps less ugly!
I'll keep an eye out for the re-build service too. If it's relatively cheap and I can get the exhaust out then it might make sense.

Brakes. Good to know they're not oddballs. I thought I'd seen them mounted like that on pictures in the forum, but wasn't 100% sure.

Brake line. Unfortunately I ordered one the other day! I should have thought to ask here first!

Swingarm. Crash damage would make more sense! The heel-plate appeared to cover the damaged area, so I'd thought it had been bashed inwards at some point and rubbed the swingarm, but it couldn't have caused that much damage without having been pretty badly damaged itself. My bike has certainly been dropped (the sheer quantity of plastic welds and patches of fibreglass inside the panels are quite something) and barring re-buying most bits, my chances of cosmetic perfection are pretty much nill :)

I also pulled the rear pads out today:

Which would explain why the rear disc was way too thin! (There's a little bit of brake material left on one pad) I have another from eBay ready to fit though.

Thanks

they would have been squeeking just a little lol!!!!!!i'll 2nd the crash damage the swingarm, the angle of the mark is the same as the heel plate.....as if its snapped off and then rubbed against it(possibly).nothing to worry about though!

brakes are fine, they can only be mounted the one way so you could never have one on the wrong side......
hope you enjoy the bike mate :D :D :D
please,god,....give me the chance to prove that winning the lottery won't spoil me!!!
