Ok some good points their but just to clear up

the bike will be used for f400 racing so no cant buy a bigger bike, but it needs to still be a road bike so no total loss etc

Iv recently fitted a new filter (1000 miles ago now) and had a oil and filter change about 2k ago, will be getting some new oil in it and spark plugs before my first round next weekend.

I weight 60 kg (9 1/2 stone ish) and regularly go to the gym so loosing weight isnt much of an option and iv actually started a similar thread on cheep weight saving mods

o and regularly adjust clean and re lube my chain, and on my ctc course the guy who did it said he's seen on a dyno a 125gp bike with and un-lubed chain cost 3bhp from the bike

I think my bike could do with the valve clearances done as iv done about 4,000 miles on it now and dont know when it was last done.

O and I will be seeking advice as to optinum gearing for each track so that at least should be correct

Hey Spike,

The real cheapest go faster stuff is between your ears.

Practice and ideas of what to do. I reckon your moto will be plenty fast enough as it stands and that the major factor will be how your mental skills shape up.

Your first race will be very good for you to get an idea of how much you are off the pace (or not!)

I would go for a 14t front sprocket as the drive off corners and onto straights is more important than outright top speed (if you can get there)

Cheapest bike mods - get it dyno's, check the fuelling and make sure it is optimised. You need to make sure you are making the mot use of the aur the motor breathes and fundamental carb setup is key.

Might not seem like you get anything to keep for your money..but if you know in your head the bike is top top then I am sure you can go faster.

.
i've been saying this to you for a while...and I dont mean a £25 run just to see what its making.

bite the bullet and pay for a set up and this will include everything from balancing the carbs to the correct jetting in each carbs to make your bike run to its best.

you wont make your bike go faster without spending money on it.

Yeh I no its the best thing to do but the local dyno have quoted me about £150-£250 for a full setup and I just dont have that moeny, especially as I want to get a full or half system which will mess all this setting up up.

I reckon you need to get it dyno'd man as it stands.

A guy at EMRA, Adam Hodgkinson (think) races a pretty standard looking VFR in the F400, opens and Streetstock classes.

He turns 1m01 laps on this road bike...which has std pipes, std rearsets and it's lights etc..

I could only get a 1m03 on the BMC uber pimp RVF.

So...get your std bike set up, get riding it fast and you have no worries!

half system for christmas or the like..it is not essential.

Fontyyys first 400 was an NC29 he took it to a dyno for a set up after fitting a Micron his power jumped from 56-63BHP, yes he paid for it...

was it worth it? no question.

and you have to remember its not just the power but how it makes it.

so you dont have the £200 to Dyno it properly, so I'm guessing you dont have the £200+ for a system.... :?:

Depending on how tight you're having it, forget about keeping up, just enjoy your riding. You are still new to 400's and have a lot to learn and plenty of mistakes to make. Damn, I'm still learning and still making mistakes. Once you stop trying to keep up and just enjoy yourself you'll be happier when you get off the bike.

I'll tell you a wee short story. The track day I did last year where I seriously injured myself was an absolute blast up until I came off. I was out on a grid with a lot of bigger bikes, some better riders and some loonies (mostly filled with friends or people I know). One of my friends was out with me on track on his SV650. Now, Steven races, and is very competive in his lap-times. His race bike had somewhere in the 70 odd bhp and mine was running home-brew ram-air with God knows what BHP but it felt fine beneath me. Now I'm sure that a better rider than me on my 400 wouldn't get lapped by Steve on his 650 but I didn't care. I tried to follow him and his braking markers, his lines etc and nearly fell off LOL. Both of us came out of the top hairpin with the rear sliding in the slight damp (him on Super Corsa's and me on 090's) and what a hoot. After 3 sessions on the track I was learning the course a lot more (I hated the first 2 sessions and was ready to blame the bike for my own in-ability) but with a bit more experience and knowledge of the track I started to go quicker. I didn't care who was faster than me, I had a ball on my own, I had my braking markers nailed, I knew where I was apexing, I knew where to get on the gas etc but we all know how that day ended. 3 hours of surgery, 5 days in hospital, crutches lots of physio etc but I blame that on another rider and I also ran out of talent, something that I accept now but also regret.

Do what you can afford, have a read of 'Twist of the Wrist' 1 and 2 as recommended by many and just enjoy riding your bike. There are always faster riders so don't worry about it.

hmm think il get some new plugs, do the valve clearances and save up to have the bike dyno setup before round 2 20th agaust at the combe see what see's putting out, if its anywere near 60 id be over the moon but i think its a bit rich (zorst is a bit black inside and hardly ever needs choke + poor fuel consumption)
