HARD CARB RUBBERS, "TIP"
Just had to remove my tank and airbox and found it a bugger to get back on because the carb rubbers were rock hard, soon sorted them out though, sat them in boiling water for a few minutes n they softened up enough to get the airbox on with ease, gotta work fast though...
JUST THOUGHT IT MIGHT HELP SOMEONE ELSE SOMEDAY..

Yes buddy, use and air dry on them, this will soften them up if you are next to the bike. or place in some hot water, drain them good but quick, not to get water into carbs.

If you want warm something up in water but need to dry it after ... put it in a plastic bag.

Can't remember where I heard it, but another (totally unsubstantiated by me) tip is to pop them into Antifreeze for a spell, as there are "rubber conditioners" in there because of antifreezes requirments to travel through hoses made of the stuff.
I'm having rubber issues today and am trying both, antifreeze first.
Will report.

Antifreeze update - forget it - soaked overnight in antifreeze, didnt do a thing.
The hot water trick helped, but it turns out that the bastards wont fit because they seem to have "grown" over the years and are now too small for the venturi of the carb to fit into. All I ended up doing was squashin flexible hot rubbers about and watch them still not fit. First run out, what seemed the best "compromise" fitment of the airbox saw it fall off in moments (indicated by change in induction noise and performance)
I have a dremel and thus I have the solution to the problem already made - grind them out and make them bigger - practiced on some spare 600 ones, it works a treat.
24 year old carb rubbers huh, not many options - interesting point, if there were to be stock of brand new ones sitting in Yamaha stores somewhere, would age have made them go hard too...?

The new ones I bought from Yamaha were fine - the airbox just popped on
