In dropped a shim, but something else came out? - Help!

Post by Killogen »

Hi everyone,

Been using viper_biker's guide to valve clearences (and very good it is too). Stipped down my nc30 and checked the clearences and all the shims on cylinder 4 need replacing. Got the 2 exhaust and outer inlet fine but went to get the inboard inlet shim and found it was missing. I hadn't tried removing it so can only assume it somehow got pulled out by a rag as the engine was running ok prior to this.

I searched everywhere, all over the floor, round all the castings on top (not an easy job trying to see past the forks) but to no avail. I'm damn sure its not in the cylinder as the spark plugs were left in loose and the inlets blocked up. Turned the engine very gently by hand and it spins fine, but I did hear a small rattle like it had fallen down. I've dropped the sump as much as I could without removing the exhaust and couldn't see it in there at all but did find something else (see below).

Any hints now on finding this shim? Seeing as the engine spins fine could I get away with starting it up, leaving it to idle and hoping the oil flow can wash it into the sump? Not ideal I know.

Section 2 of this is what on earth is this part?

Found it in the sump, slightly crushed and damaged on the edges its about 14mm long and 7mm diameter. I've not done anything involving parts like this so guess its from a previous owner.

That to me looks a lot like a cylinder head locating dowel from between the cylinder head and block.

Which exactly matches what I believe....

As for the missing Shim, If there is the slightest chance it has got into the cylinder DO NOT START THE ENGINE. It will cause huge damage to the engine, effectively writing it off. If you definetley cannot find it by looking all over the engine and workshop, get one of those extending magnetic pick up pens and wave it around the inlets and exhausts and with any luck a nice little shim will be on the end when you pull it out. Just be careful not to wave it around so that it scrathes the piston/valves/cylinder etc.

Hope this helps...

OK so its a locating dowel. I've never had the block apart and the bikes has run fine for the past year so it must be a dropped part from earlier work. Nice one.

I'll grab a magnetic thingy tomorrow and trying rooting around. Looking over a previous post on here I might just give my bike a damn good shake after that to try bounce it out of wherever it is. I'm sure I heard a rattle of something falling inside so I might be lucky.

Fingers crossed.
