Sprockets - Anyone squeezed a 16T front on?

Post by domski »

I'm wondering if anyone has fitted at 16 tooth front sprocket before - it would be special order I would think.

Would it even go on? I can't access that side of my bike at the moment (it's on bricks against the garage wall) so I can't see if a 16T sprocket would even fit in the space provided.

Why do you want to fit a 16T front sprocket?

OK, I'm going to run a 520 chain and the smallest rear sprockets I can get made are 40 teeth. As I will be racing this on the roads I will need longer gearing than standard. Standard gearing is 15/39 so if I go 15/40 I will be shorter than standard. If I can't get smaller rear sprockets, I'll need to get a 16 tooth front sprocket.

Glad you asked?

What rear wheel is fitted to this bike - or perhaps what bike is it ?

We have 39T 520 rears in stock for the NSR250 / NC23 / NC29 ...

Plus just about anything made to order.

16T front is a no go BTW.

Thanks Graeme, I'd emailed Talon and they got back with sprockets from 40T - 50T

I thought a 16 would be unlikely, I know there is no room on a NC30 or 35.

I'll be in touch shortly. Cheers.

Ive never done it but Id have thought it would fit.
Is your bike really going to cope pulling 16/40 gearing Ive never heard of anyone gearing thees bikes for higher top speed.

Do you know what G/F has in the way of 520 rear sprockets.

At the North West 200 or Isle of Man you would find that a 400 will hit the limiter in top gear on standard gearing (15/39). I'd probably want to go for something like 15/37, but as Talon only go down to a 40 rear, I'd have to run something like 16/40 to achieve the desired effect (16/39 is actually closer to 15/37).

Hope that makes sense.

Obviously on short circuits you'd probably keep the 15 on the front (less resistance) and go to bigger rear sprockets.

If you take the plastic front sprocket cover off with the steel gaurd behind it (if you still run it on your racer), you can fit a 16 & even a 17 tooth front sprocket on a NC29 if you need to.

I've had a 16t on my nc30.

Part of my sprocket cover is ground away for easy access, but I don't think it changes clearance. I've never used a 16t, previous owner used it at Philip Island.
