Hi Guys,
i'm embarking on a new project by trying to wire up a GSXR digital speedo to the NC30. This all came about as i can't get the stock speedo to work reliably (keeps breaking for some reason ican't fathom!). Anyway i was planning to put up some info on here if theres any interest?
1 Quick question before i get too far into this. The GSXR wiring diagram shows 2 wires coming from the ECU to the speedo to give the RPM. I'm assuming that this will be a straight pulsed signal that will get translated to the tacho. Will the NC30 CDI output a similar signal? Possibly to the coils? i'm assuming it will but wanted to check whether i'm barking up the wrong tree here!
Any assistance would be gratefully recieved.
Info i've got so far
GSXR speedos can be picked up for about £25. The stock sensor is about £20 also but the alternative ones i'm looking at are in the £5 range.
SPEEDO
The speedo uses 4 neodynium magnets to provide a pulsed signal for the speedo itself. I can use a simple hall effect sensor to pick this up off the back wheel (i reckon i can glue the magnets to the rear hub and mount the sensor around the rear caliper bracket area).
I've researched hall effect sensors and have a stock GSXR one on my bidding list on ebay. However this is quite a large sensor. From looking about on other sites they recommend any hall effect sensor using a NPN style (rather that PNP). I'm going to order up a cherry MP101401 sensor as its a much smaller package and should be similar sensitivity wise.
The GSXR speedo apparently reads about 10% too high and so with the larger rear wheel on the NC30 this should be about right. I will be testing this using a GPS/car to check out the readings (if i get that far!)
IDIOT LIGHTS
The idiot lights are a straightforward swap with the ones in the NC30 speedo.
COOLANT SENSOR
The coolant temperature sensor is a bit of an unknown quantity without a GSXR one to take base readings from so i'm going to keep my fingers crossed that they both use standard parts and so the resistance range should be similar.
Think thats about it for the moment! If it all goes wrong i'll be knocking on KOSO's door for one of their aftermarket speedos

Re: Wiring GSXR Digital Speedo
Probably not judging from the difficulty that I've seen others get into with digital tachos. The nc's use wasted spark ignition, I don't think the gixxer would. Hell, an nc30 tacho can't even be made to work on an nc35!elrikos wrote:The GSXR wiring diagram shows 2 wires coming from the ECU to the speedo to give the RPM. Don't let that put you off though, sounds like a good project.
