I would say so. Sounds like it's probably killed the battery too. Safer to replace both reg/ rec and battery. (I replaced all 3 a little while ago, battery, reg/rec/ and alternator for the same reason.)

thanks for that, i bought a new battery 2wks ago still in its box so just need to get the reg/rec,
i took it down the road for for a spin (about 5-6 miles) and it was overheating could this problem be connected to the reg/rec at all?
thanks

:? I wouldn't have though so. Overheating due to lack of cooling through the rads, best have a look at those too, they can get rather blocked especially the lower one if not kept clear.
Check it's got some anti-freeze in it, sounds daft but if someone has just been topping up with water the anti-freeze might be very low. 5-6 miles does seem rather quick to me. Do you mean it's up to temp, 90 degrees or so, or way up high on the gauge?

i just switched the bike off and noticed it was boiling/bubbling/rumbling. but it has been stood for about 2 months previous to that 'spin' down the road.

On that not - water is a better coolant than antifreeze anyways...so more water = better cooling.. 8-)

But on another "on that note" if you do just use water it will rust the crap out of the impeller in the water pump so unless you're racing and drain the system regularly it's probably best to use anti-freeze.
Too spensiff!!!

i put the other rec/reg on and started the bike and i was getting 13.8v switched on the lights and it dropped to 11.2v, i then switched them off and it remained at 11.2!!!!!!!
also these readings are with the battery that i think needs replacing (new battery currently on charge). would a crappy battery make a difference to the readings???
thanks
