Sub-air cleaner filter - whats it for?

Hey,

As per the title - what's the sub-air filter for, apart from filtering sub-air! In other words, if I were to remove it and it fell in the bin, would I need to source another, or can I get by without it?

The 2 black tubes that feed into the box that the sub-air filter sits are for venting the carbs (speifically the slide if I'm not mistaken) and its purpose is so that nothing cats sucked into the carbs, similarly to why you have an air filter, but for a different purpose, obviously.

Thanks V_B, I think will order a new one just in case. The old one is pretty poor and starting to disintegrate on me. For the sake of a fiver it's probably not worth the risk of leaving it out.

NC35 get it touch with rick about getting a new one as i got 4 from honda before and the price increased to nearly £6 a filter

Aaah, sorry fella, too late. I ordered one from Dave Silver at£ 4.75 plus theft, along with a couple other fiddly little bits. Stopped short at £90(!) for a new petrol tank cowling piece though!

Will try to remember Rick for future orders though! :D

You can use a bit of chip pan filter which only costs a coupla quid. I reckon you could even use a bit of scotch brite if push came to shove but dont know of its heat resistence qualitys

The sub-air cleaner foam on my NC30 had dissintegrated, and obviously without me knowing it had, over a length of time a small amount of oil came through the pipes from the top of the camshafts and into my carbs, which totally clogged them up and the bike lost two cylinders! Basically ran absolutely crap! I had to completely strip the carbs and clean them out before going through all the hasle of refitting and tuning them in again.


For the foam however, I managed to get a sheet of universal filter foam for £3 and it is perfect for the sub air cleaner and I can get about 15 individual filters per sheet of foam. Good Times.
