de-restrictor woes

Post by leighc » Tue Apr 14, 2009 7:55 pm

hi there,

after trying to fiddle about with the speedo on my bike at the weekend the de-restrictor wires came out of the back of the clocks, and now it is running like a complete pig. it revs cleanly to 5k but after that it feels like the engine wants to jump out of the frame, like it's running on two cylinders. I basically have a black box with a black and orange wire and no idea where to plug them back into

any help?

ta

thats because it is running on 2 cylinders.its called the limp home mode where it cuts the spart to the rear 2 cylinders.

do the reversal of whatever it was you did :poke: ,you have maybe damaged it or made a break in the circuit or something similar.

thanks, but I already know what's caused the problem, just need to know where to plug the wires back into, so to speak

I was fiddling with the speedo and then suddenly the wires were hanging out, so I don't know where they were originally plugged!

d'oh

easy fix mate. pop a de-limiter in to the main loom and it by-passes the speed limiter thats causing your bike to run like a pig.
2 options..

so are you saying the black box I have on it is now useless? I have had the bike for 3 months and up until the de-restrictor came out it was running fine. I was hoping for a " oh you need to plug it back in xxxxx underneath xxxxx," but I'm guessing it was home made so probably no standardisation with these...?

Can't say if the black box is fixable or not, but you can always remove the restrictor from inside the speedo! I often wonder why people buy "magic boxes" when it's really not that difficult to DIY it! Check my guide on here: http://www.rvf400rr.talktalk.net/articles.htm

if its a small black box (not one of mine) like the one i bought, its "potted" sealed/water proofed and you cant get inside it.
but this does leave us with options...
inside the box will be fine. so check the wires sticking out, are they broken etc? check the pins in the plug in to main loom, then check the wiring from the pins all the way back to the ECU unit.

the kits i sell are less bulky than boxes and can be hidden easier.

cheers for the link as its confirmed that the kit can be used on a RVF as well.
