Charging Issues - Not the rectifier!
Hi,
Since I've had the bike (NC30) I've been having to trickle charge it every night to top up the battery. After a quick browse around the 'net, I discovered the RR's are made of chocolate and ordered a new one. This was duly fitted and the problem remained, so the seller replaced the unit for me. (In hindsight I should have checked it!)
I stripped the bike today and followed a very useful flowchart provided by 'Electrosport'.
At idle the bike is outputting approx 12.5v. At 2k and 5k RPM it doesn't fluctuate much. Following the guide I then measured the voltage from the battery positive to the rectifier output. (Red/white) Apparently it should be outputting under 0.2v while mine was far higher. It then suggested I check the wiring for this. I stripped back most of the loom, cleaned all the connectors, and still no joy.
Am I going down a dead end? Can anyone shed any light on this? Its a bit annoying, as I now have to top up with electricity as well as petrol these days!

if the connections from the reg/rec to the battery are all sound then test the voltage output of the alternator.
to do this,remove the block connector which is by the r/h side of the bike.its the one with the three yellow wires.disconnect it and test the side that comes from the alternator.
set the multimeter to ac volts,and with the bike at 5000rpm test between two of the three yellow wires,then move one probe to another and so on until you have taken three seperate readings.
they should all be at least 50 volts and the same.

I now appear to be getting voltage! Getting an output from the alternator, and the rectifier now seems to be feeding the battery. The only difference is that I pretty much stripped the bike down, pulled and cleaned the connectors and gave a blast of electrical cleaner to everything that needed it.
Now, I will admit that the voltages all seem to be slightly down, so I have bodged a multimeter onto the bike and will go for a run to see how it operates in the real world.

you may have dry breaks in your loom wire looks fine but wire inside is broken ( happened mine so i made a new sections when i worked for Maplin on my lunch!!!
