My thought on NC30/NC35 cooling

In putting my NC30 back together and having seen some pictures of other people's setups, I cant help but wonder if there would be some benefit to using Fibreglass Exhaust wrap where the exhaust front downpipes pass the radiator?

They seem too close for comfort. Now I know this is probably the way it always has been but surely a bit of that round the downpipes in the radiator area would prevent excess heat being put into the radiator?

Like the extra grounding, this might well fall into the category of might not make any difference but equally cant hurt

i hear what your saying but i'm not sure you'd see much heat from the downpipes induced into the radiator but you might see temps under the fairings come down but ,i've seen exhaust wrap used on rally cars to help keep temps under the bonnet down,you might be onto something there ...

I use it my my race NC because the radiator is a little too close for comfort.

I agree that it comes under the category of it cannot hurt..

I used it when I had the "HRC" system....it still melted my fairings..lol

It is itchy as feck to fit it...wear some gloves!

i contemplated this before when my mate bought a heap load of the stuff,never got round to doing it.....it certainly won't make it any worse.

On the same lines, presumably wrapping the rear headers would help to keep the shock temperature down and reduce fade...?

I would say so too Rick maybe to a lesser extent than the rads with the distance being greater in the case of the shock.

To be really accurate about its effect I guess some comparisons with a digital thermostat threaded into the rad and a temp probe sitting inside the fairings. Anyone got this sort of equipment? Any recommendations?

Obviously there's a massive difference between the shed heat from the front headers before and after heat wrapping (you can hold the wrapped headers with your hand). My bike's noticeably cooler to be on when the air temp is over 30C.

Heat wrap is used on all forms of auto racing in Oz because of the damn heat.

The heat wrap will effect the exhaust flow, positively or negatively I don't know, but you do see lots of high temp exhaust coating places claim there are benefits to speeding up the exhaust flow.

I think Rick's idea of wrapping the rear headers to save the shock from boiling is a great idea.

how about ceramic coating?? when i had a superduke im sure i read of people coating the headers with good power gains

as has been said its not going to do any worse, any improment on the nc's cooling system is a step forward

Phase One world endurance team wrap the exhaust on their r1 at ht erear where it goes past the rear shock under the seat for the same reason, but with 24 hours of being thrashed they more likely see a benefit for this, also the pipes go alot closer to the shock on the r1

I agree that on the front downpipes that heat would get radiated into the bottom rad and reduce the effectivness off the cooling but i can see this being more of a problem at slow speed/stationary as at higher speeds the air flow will help keep the heat form the downpipes away

Also I remeber when i was working with a historic race car prep tema the guy there said he never liked wrapping the exhaust because it just kepts the heat inside the headers and so the engine block which makes it harder for the cooling system to cool the engine
