Basket case NC24 the restoration. lots of pics beware

Post by steve01 »

Hi guys I thought I should share this with you as you have been good enough to help me, This is the story so far for project basket case.

Saw the bike advertised on ebay went out took a look (in the dark like a muppet) purchased it got it home and thats were the fun starts.

Below are pics of the bike the day i got it home.

Ok Ok you can all stop laughing at me now.
I purchased this bike because i have always wanted one it was the first one i viewed and the Mrs wasnt there to talk sense to me so i bought it.

Upon closer inspection i found that the collector pipe was shafted and also the end can had a hole in it, the front calipers were seized on, the rear shock was shot and the front forks were leaking. i did know about the dodgey paint job though so i know i wasnt in for a minter.

Bring on the strip down.

i havent got to far with this yet as i have had to work and also the wife has other projects for me. But here are some pics of what i have done so far.

More on the way as i have done lots more to the bike.

Good luck;I am a little envious because it reminds me of my nc24 when I first got it[which has now been nicked].Seems you have a lot of work to do.The most difficult and expensive job is going to be the exhaust collector. It is an engine out job to replace.A new collector could be difficult to obtain so you may end up fitting an nc21 one which means a lower level silencer.Have you ridden the thing yet? They are such fun

Cant wait to see how this thing progresses. I think the NC24 doesnt get quite as much attention as the 30 and in fairness the 180 degree crank seems to make it sound much more throaty and growly than the NC30. Least from the videos I have seen.

Now I wonder if there is a full system for the NC24...

I think with some interest taken in the '24 some interesting stuff could be achieved. I mean for example what are the yoke dimensions in comparison to the 30? Theres plenty of ideas for frontend swaps on its younger cousin. RVF front end on one Sir? You know it makes sense! :D

Hi guys i feel alot better about this bike now after your comments, Still havent ridden the thing yet so im really looking forward to the day hopefully this summer to ride it. Fork conversion is something im looking into, Collector pipe has now been sorced and paid for and should be with me any day soon just looking for a really nice stainless exhaust possibly a stubby end can on it as i like the look of them. But i have much more important things to do first like clean and strip everything oh and have a beer.

Jobs to do so far.

Get the engine out (i have 3 rounded engine mounting bolts so this should be fun)
Rebuild all calipers with new pistons and seals / new braided hoses all round.
either a fork conversion or total rebuild of old forks with new springs in.
New rear suspension needed as mine is in a really sorry state, not sure what yet.
collector pipe to be fitted and a new shiny zorst system put on.
Powder coating of pretty much everything that needs it especially the wheels they are nasty.
A good clean of everything.
Tank and pannels need a re-spray (i think im going to go for white and an aqua colour)
Pollish the frame.
powder coat / or whatever you do to an engine to make it look pretty again.
A full service (Nearly forgot that one)
New rubber
New hoses possibly those really nice samco jobbies
Probably a hooge loan to get it all done unless i get lucky with ebay.

This should keep me busy for a bit so keep an eye on this, im looking to get it done in time for the summer so no pressure.

If anyone needs any pics of anything while the bike is stripped let me know. I am hopefully going to do a couple of how to guides aswell

Will post more pics later today hopefully.

Good stuff chap. Hows the collector on yours? mine is well shot im gonna take pics when i get it off just to give you all a laugh. Had my nearly new collector delivered the other day, and just need to remove the rounded off engine mount bolts and away we go.

Keep us all updated with the progress on your bike as it looks as if we are both in the same boat. are you doing a full strip down and rebuild?

cheers

My collector wasnt even on the bike! It had broken off the rear pipes, managed to buy a complete system which isnt perfect but its very good.

I quickly built mine up, just too see what it needed, turns out the head gaskets have gone :o Total nightmare cause you cant get the things, but ill get it sorted some way or another.

Have to say mate, wait till you get to ride it, only did 5.1 kms on mine but it was amazing the engines pull and sound great.
