fzr 400 rr starter relay/solenoid ? 3tj
Hi, have a 3tj. and it won't start. the lead from the positive battery terminal goes into a unit 2 or 3 inches away. when you thumb the start button there is nothing, tho it was clicking 1 or twice before. is this a relay or starter solenoid ? is it common for them to go (it's a 1990) ? does anyone have a spare or does anyone know about price/availability ?
any help appreciated
thanks

Hi there welcome to the forum
Lets take it from the top .... Is the red Kill switch by the throttle set to "run" ??? yeah we've all done it
Turn the key and do you get :
Ignition lights on the dash board ??? If yes do you get a neutral light (green) If not put it in neutral as the side stand cut out switch won't let you start it.
Do you get a "weep, weep" and rapid loud ticking noise ??? this is the EXUP opening and closing and the fuel pump spinning over. If not then it sounds like the battery is dead, test it with a volt meter accross the terminals and/or recharge it. Alternatively use some jump leads or a battery booster pack (check the instructions and be careful when you connect them). You can get a pair of bike jump leads from Halfords they have smaller clips for the smaller bike battery terminals).
If your battery is good then you need to check the fuses if these are good (and everything else is good) make sure the bikes in neutral and put the side stand up, there's a sensor for the clutch which may fail.
Do these and get back to us

Re: fzr 400 rr starter relay/solenoid ? 3tj
Firstly check as above.
The starter solenoid runs through the fuel pump/starter relay which is next to all the fuses. I have had problems with this on my 400, hybrid and 600 genesis (all same relay, also on thundercat and foxeye) so it might be worth checking. Might just be a bad connection but on one of my bikes the unit was u/s. Check the blue/white cable connections on it (going from memory). On 2 of my bikes this was the problem and a quick clean up resolved the problem.
Seem to think that pulling the clutch in bypasses the in gear/stand down circuit but dont quote me on that.
Still worth a try!
