Hard starting nc29 after a long run
Hi, before i start prodding my bike with a large stick was wondering if you experts can help?
What it is, I can run my bike to work and back every day, it starts ok, either way no problem.. But if I go for a long run then put my cherished one to bed until next day. Then next day the cherished one will not start for ages and I can stand prodding the start button for ever more, well a few minutes anyway, with or without choke. then without warning the damn thing starts as if to say "wasnt me" On its dud starts it does tend to fire bringing on a few revs then immediately stops. I and my friend tend to think its a fuelling problem but I dont know as it does seem to work most of the time.
Any Ideas?

Spark plugs? When was the last time you changed them?
Chris.

Re: Hard starting nc29 after a long run
when you try and start it in the morning is it by using proper starting technique......choke no throttle?
check and make sure fuel is getting to the carbs and cylinders, and check the spark at the plugs.it may be a ignition problem with the ht leads etc.

Hi wullvfr, well its so random its hard to pin down, just this morning it started fine, one push of the button and it was chugging along nicely. Its when its been out for a long ride the day before that I have noticed this happening but I will take what advice has been given so far but I do think it maybe fuel related as it does tend to want to start but just seems to gasp before giving up. Just unsure atm.
thanks

if it was fuel or electrical ... it would do it all the time..

^^^^^^^^^^^ Nonsense!
It sounds like fuelling over electrical to me, get the carbs off and give them a good clean looking for anything untoward. Set your float heights when you stick them back on. Make sure the choke is working properly too.
I dont advocate its over use, but easy start can be a diagnostic tool. Next time it wont start, give it a quick spray into the airbox....if it fires straight away you know you have a spark.

really? hmmm odd as every fuel or electrical issue i have over the years had showed the symptoms regardless of of far i rode, the fact the bike was on/running was enough

Re: Hard starting nc29 after a long run
Not really that odd LP, intermittant faults can be down to something as stupid as what angle the bike is leaning at or whether a jolt has dislodged or re-connected an earth or a connection. Cant really figure out why its only manifesting itself after a long run. It's a conundrum, shrouded in a mystery......but my money is on the carbs. I'd also blow out the jets while I was it, might be the idle jets.

Re: Hard starting nc29 after a long run
Ok thanks for the extra info and debate, as soon as I get time I will have a look at the carbs and fuel lines to make sure they are ok, will also check out plugs and related electrical bits. Its just odd and very annoying when the bike works fine most of the time and now and then a little hiccup to spoil the day.
