- Version R has the headlight fairing; Version S is unfaired.
- Version R has a black mild steel exhaust with a bolt-on can; Version S exhaust is a one-piece stainless number IIRC.
- Version R has different rear peg hangers as well.
- Oh, and I have a feeling that the Version S might have Brembo front calipers rather than the standard Nissin ones.

Does anyone know of any others?

HTH.

Excellent choice, the R is the coolest looking, IMHO.

Scorpion do a can for the CBR400 that fits BTW!

chmod's Version R here:

and my (recently sold :( ) Version R here:

I've never known if my bike is a Version R or Version S. It has a sticker on the side panels saying Version R, it has the different rear peg hangers, it has the black exhaust headers with the bolt on exhaust, but then there was no fairing headlight unit, but then it had a different headlight bracket and different headlight to the standard round ones anyway. Yet on the frame under the seat it says F3S. So is my bike a Version S or R. It only has normal brakes too, not the Brembo ones. So i'm guessing it's a Version R more than an S. Any ideas?

Bodhi - yours is a Version R, which is the FIIIS model. sounds like a previous owner converted the headlight, maybe after an off? The fairing, headlight and dash are as rare as rocking horse poo, so maybe he replaced with what he could find?

Thanks for the scorpion idea, iv bin meaning to look for one to replace the standard can because the previous owner never got round to doing it (why?!). Is it any of the cans for 1996 cbr400's? Or a specific one?

The FIIIS sticker under the seat was another unanswered question, i looked it up all over the internet but nothing came up saying what it meant!

Saturday is taking ages to arrive...

cheers for the enlightenment alexibrow

whoever owned the bike in japan clearly had an off as there's scuffed on the right hand engine casing and along the exhaust too, so that'll definitely be why he's changed the light then.

i could do with a new exhaust for my bike too. need to take the headers off first and sand and respray them though as riding through winter has left them rusting to pieces and looking mighty tatty.

i think it's as long as you get a can that's for the cbr400 NC29 it'll fit. think someone on here clarified that the nc23 ones don't fit as the bolt holes don't match up right

Bodhi; you're right, it's the NC29 can that's common with the NC31:

Thought I remembered this coming up before!

Just to add a little here,

Looking around the web seems to support everything Alexi has said. However I own a bike registered as a 97 Version R, yet it has Brembo calipers, the common headlight (although these get changed all the time), Black exhaust pipes, bolt on can and the more common rear peg mounts (from the S model). Since the bike has never really been written about by English speakers there is very little detail available about the bikes. Basically I think they were only slightly different and often likely to have changes done to them before they left many shops to suit different riders preferences. Basically I think if you buy a CB400 you should buy it based on the exact model you're looking at, not what it is supposed to be, as they might be different. I used to think the difference was important and wanted to own the race model with Brembo calipers...now I think given the age of the bike it's not that important.
