electrical problem?

problem, my battery is charged, got a new reg/rec and needed to check volts from alternator. when i push ignition the bike is making the usual noise but not firing over, but before it gets a chance this (pic below with the black box) makes a 'click' sound and then all power to bike goes, its not the fuse and if unplugged and put in again it has power again but does the same thing. am i best to just replace this? the plug going into it is a little fried also. is it anything to do with earthing?

if it clicks when you try to start the bike then it is the starter relay.its just a switch.

what was the output of the alternator?was it sound?

That is the starter relay and Main fuse to the bike.

sorry Will didnt even get as far as getting volts as it doesnt start ....yet. can i get a reading when only switched on? i thought it was 50v at 5000rpm?

this relay/fuse is theeeee main one, if this does not work, no power will get to the bike. its hondas 1st fail safe. there is no XXXVolts at any RPM with this. you should have 12v and thats it.
1- you say the plug is fried? remove it, remove the pins and clean it up, put Vaseline/grease in to the plug. clean the other end it plugs in to as well.
2- if the main fuse is blowing then you have a short. its probably inside the fried connector!

i didn't realise you had not got the bike started yet.

to get a reading with for the alternator output,the bike has to be running.

as for the relay you should get 12volts at one side,then 12 volts at the other when you push the starter,thats if it works a treat but in your case it obviously is not.

you say that the fuse does not blow at all,everything just goes dead.check all connections and make sure they are all ok.clean them and if in any doubt replace them.

thinking that too Will might just cut the pink plug and put on new spades and see how it goes as this is the part thats been fried a little, doubt it will change but hey times are tight and even 20 quid can go to something else.

> its been fried because there was a short inside...! clean it up. be careful of cutting the old crimps/pins off as the wire left may not be long enough to reach. but do take the connector off, take note of what colour wires plug in to what. re-new the pins/crimps and plug them directly in with no connector.

A wiring diagram from the Haynes manual will help you loads, im sure someone would be kind enough to mail you the nc29 schematic? LP?
