£1.50 fork seal driver

Post by elrikos »

Hi guys,
learned a lot through the forum so thought i'd share a tip i used today to do my fork seals.
when you get to the point of reassembly leave the hammer and screwdrivers in the tool box and use a piece of 41mm waste pipe. Its the stuff you use to plumb in sink wastes. Its usually white plastic and you can get it in most DIY stores for about £1.50 for 3 metres. You'll need about 4 inches of it (although length is not crucial!).
take your length of waste pipe and make a cut lengthways down one edge or it (so you can pull it open to make a C shape).
put the stanchion into the fork lower followed by the bushing
pull the waste pipe open and clip it onto the stanchion.
If you hold it with your hand you can now use the whole stanchion as a kind of slide hammer to knock the bushing into the fork lower. Once you've finished unclip it and install the washer. then put the new fork seal onto the stanchion and slide it down as far as you can by hand.
Now the clever bit!
Take the old fork seal and chop the inner lips off it with a knife. Also try to slice as much of the rubber as you can off the outside of the seal (otherwise it'll stick in the fork lower along with the new seal). Alternatively you could take the blow lamp to the old seal and burn the rubber off it.
Slide the old seal over the stanchion and place it on top of the new one.
Clip your plastic waste pipe over the stanchion again and use it as a slide hammer to drive the new fork seal into the lower leg. The metal cage of the old seal is such that the waste pipe won't go through it, thus keeping your new fork seal all pristine and pretty.
Remove the waste pipe again along with the old fork seal.
Complete your reassembly as usual!
Makes for a really cheap fork seal driver and as its plastic theres no chance of it damaging the stanchion.
You could use larger bore waste pipe (i think they have 50mm) but it would mean it won't clip to the stanchion so tightly, making it harder to use the weight of the stancion as the slide hammer.

Anyway just thought i'd post this up in case it helps someone!
Cheers
Rich
