Poorly NC30 - Please help me cure it!

Post by Aether »

Hi chaps,

The bike had been running well, a little bit rough at idle maybe and possibly a bit juicy, but seemed to shift OK. It's now having problems cold starting. It starts on the choke, idles to about 5k and then starts to drop revs until it cuts out and won't start again (fuel tap on etc)? Could it be the weather, or is it more likely a fuelling problem?
The last owner didn't know when the valve clearances were last done, so I'm going to tackle that along with cleaning and balancing the carbs, already done plugs, oil, oil filter. Anything else I should check?

Thanks

Nick

hello-

you have mentioned pretty much everything you want to be checking

do you have a manual???definately a must!!!!!

when you say the bike dies,is this after putting the choke off?

how does the bike run when you are out and about?

poor idling could be due to valve clearances, possibly only running on 3 cylinders....possibly even 2.

have you touched the idle screw at all?

Thanks for the reply William.

I think it's firing on all cylinders, as all the downpipes felt hot. I haven't touched the idle screw either. The bike seems to run well, but as it's my first bike and I've not really got anything to judge it against as I've never ridden another NC30!
The first time it cut out (last week) I did put in the choke a touch after it had been idling for about 3-4 mins, but this morning I didn't touch it and it the revs just started to drop...

i would make sure the choke is working,if the revs are dropping whilst the choke is on i would make sure.

with full choke on the revs should be about 4-5,000rpm.

unless you have a fuelling problem............

I'll have a look at the choke and fuel lines when I do the carbs and hopefully I'll get to the bottom of it, if not I'll be back!

Thanks for the help William.

as william says a working choke generally doenst do that, the revs will maintain themselves if its working fully. so my suspicions are they are not.

in order for you to inspect the linkages the least you have to do is tank and airbox off, but would be nice if you pulled the carbs off altogether and gave the linkages a quick sand with wet and dry and grease them up again.

i am a local lad so if you get into trouble just PM, been around the NC30 for long enough now and have had carb issues before which i resolved with the help of haynes and the forum

Got a new alias eh Declan?

I'm going to have a crack at stripping and balancing the carbs and while I'm at it I'll give the choke a look over, probably try doing the valve spacings too. I might as well get it all sorted before the weather gets better, I want the bike to be ready for the Surrey/Croydon chapter rideout ;)

If I run into any problems I may well drop you a line!

yip changed my ailis, its what most people call me so mite as well stick with convention.

sure drop me a line if ya do need a hand, the valve clearances are a little tricky but well do-able. just have a good read around the area, read vipers guide and read the haynes.

there are a few vids on youtube, but none of them specfic to the VFR400, most of them for inline 4, they do give you food for thought though
