Petrol Tank Cap Removal - Without Key!

Post by slippery »

Hi bought a tank from Ebay for my NC23 and unfortunatley it came with the filler cap locked. I have contacted the seller and had no reply so need to consider alternative methods. I guess that I should be able to drill the lock but just not really sure what to do.

Advice appreciated.

Cheers

if you are not bothered about the cap just hammer a screw driver into it and twist. job done.

But use a BIG screwdriver.
Thats what I'd do.
Try your key in it 1st and gently wiggle.
You may be lucky

This may sound daft, and I'm happy to be shot down, but I swear on my NC29 if I undo to 7? bolts holding the cap in place the whole lot comes off?

If thats the case, just buy a replacement fuel cap assembly, with a key, from a breaker / ebay / dealer.

Edit... Ebay to the rescue.

At £20, it may be cheaper than a locksmith.

(Bloody forum won't let me link pictures, but click the links)

See where the lock is in the middle, and the bolts round the edge... remove bolts, whole lot off (surely?).

Unfortunately Mr. Honda has headed you (and hundreds of petrol thieves) off at the pass. One of the bolts needs to have the cap open to be removed (don't ask me which one or how, my memory is shot even though I only did this about a month ago)

Well the cap is now removed. I used the subtle approach of a large screwdriver and hammer. It required a big screwdriver and quite a bit of pursuasion to turn, but is now removed with no damage to the tank, which was my main concern.

Sure that the locksmith is the safest option but I bet they know how to charge. Cost me £95 the other day to get a lock replced. I only paid £30 for the tank happy so it was worth the risk.

Um, slightly worried now, as I recently changed ALL the bolts on mine for a new Black Alloy set, for bling, without opening the cap or having the keys anywhere near the bike.

Granted I changed each bolt one at a time, but this was only done so I didn't lose any... I'm blooy sure I could take them all out without opening the cap... infact I'll try tomoro and let you know.

You can take them all out, but you can't remove the cap from the tank without the key, or, a screw driver and a big hammer :D
